The Faith We Believe: Unpacking the Creed
Prepared by David Dayler, Discipleship and Parish Life Office, and Anne Jamieson, Catechesis Office
2
What is a creed? Creed comes from the Latin “credo”
We live in a time when people are suspicious of ‘belief’ Credo is better translated as “this is where I rest my heart” or “this is the most profound truth I hold”
3
We all believe something
4
What do you believe? What you believe is where you stand
On what do you stand? Is it stable? Comforting? Sure? What you believe is what you hold What are you holding onto? Is it helping you live the life to which you are called? What you believe is what you are stretching for To whom do you stretch out your arms?
5
May this be an opportunity to rediscover your joy!
Have you ever rushed through the Creed at church? Has it been a while since you really thought about what we profess? Welcome! May this be an opportunity to rediscover your joy!

SESSION 1
7
Opening Prayer We stand before you, Holy Spirit,
conscious of our sinfulness, but aware that we gather in your name. Come to us, remain with us, and enlighten our hearts. Give us light and strength to know your will, to make it our own, and to live it in our lives. Guide us by your wisdom, support us by your power, for you are God, sharing the glory of Father and Son.
8
You desire justice for all; enable us to uphold the rights of others;
do not allow us to be misled by ignorance or corrupted by fear or favour. Unite us to yourself in the bond of love and keep us faithful to all that is true. As we gather in your name may we temper justice with love, so that all our discussions and reflections may be pleasing to you, and earn the reward promised to good and faithful servants. Amen. (This prayer was said before every session of Vatican II.)
