1 Career Discovery 2015 A Teacher’s Guide to the Event

2 Career Discovery 2015 Thank you for preparing your students for Career Discovery 2015. There are many online resources of career exploration, including Career Cruising and Kuder. These programs can help students sort out the career opportunities that await them in the future. This presentation is to act as a source of discussion as you plan for your visit to Career Discovery 2015. Please feel free to edit, add to and share this information with your colleagues. As you proceed through the presentation, please lead your students into discussion about their future and what they hope to experience at Career Discovery 2015. Refer to the notes pages for suggestions on how to use this presentation with your students.

3 What is Career Discovery 2015 is a hands-on career exploration event for all 8 TH grade students in the counties of Bullock, Chambers, Lee, Macon and Russell. Over 4,000 students from East Alabama will go through the event at the Auburn University Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.

6 Why Now? It’s never too early to start thinking about your future! The criteria for most jobs can be very specific. The earlier you decide exactly what it is you want to do, the more prepared you can become. The 8 th grade is the time to start planning for specialized high school classes and courses of study. There are many varied jobs right here in East Alabama, and this program serves as a bridge to enlighten you on what your own area has to offer.

9 What Career Will You Choose? Pick a career cluster and give three (3) reasons why you wish to pursue that career cluster. Within your chosen career cluster, pick a job you would like to do. Answer the following questions about your chosen job: – How much education does the job require? – How many of those jobs exist in my area? – Can I live on the money that the job pays?

10 Automotive Manufacturing in East Alabama Mando America Borbet Alabama Hanwha Seohan Daewon Rexnord Industries Nikki America Fuel Systems The Automotive Manufacturing Industry is one of the key clusters in all of Alabama as well as in East Alabama. This industry employs highly-skilled workers to be Machine Operators, Quality Technicians, Maintenance Technicians, and Production Engineers in a manufacturing environment that builds components for cars. Name three Automotive Manufacturing companies in East Alabama.

Process manufacturers in our Region include leading producers of small engines, vitamins, medical devices, and jet engine components. Name three Manufacturing companies in East Alabama.

12 Healthcare East Alabama Medical Center Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital Regional Rehabilitation Hospital Arbor Springs Health and Rehab Healthcare is a leading industry in East Alabama, as well as all over the state and nation. East Alabama has a leading regional medical center, an award winning orthopedic hospital, outstanding rehabilitation centers, and well known long term care facilities. Well trained, highly-skilled, and dedicated individuals are employed as doctors, nurses, certified nurse assistants, physical therapists, and pharmacy technicians. Name two Healthcare facilities in East Alabama.

13 Hospitality and Tourism Tuskegee Airmen Museum Auburn University White Water Express Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National Cheaha State Park Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center Hospitality and Tourism is a fast-growing industry in our region. Attractions provide opportunities for sporting events, white water rafting, museum excursions, state park visits, and world-class golf courses. This industry employs workers as Chefs, Hotel Managers, Tour Guides, Park Rangers, Event Planners, and Restaurant Managers. List as many Tourist attractions in our region as you can. And Many More!
