C ORNERSTONES Remove Not the Ancient Landmarks

C ORNERSTONES The Bible speaks much about landmarks and markers. Joshua 4. Joshua made the nation take stones from the Jordan He planted them in plain view. He told the people to remember God’s power and providence.

C ORNERSTONES When the people came into the land, God told them to mark the land as it was given to the tribes. The landmarks defined the boundaries of each tribe. It defined the land God gave to specific tribes and families. God wanted the people to take this seriously. Deuteronomy 19.14

C ORNERSTONES

We are to remember where we came from. We are to tell that story to others. What is the Refrain of Kings? Walked in Ways of Jeroboam What is the story of the United States? We are going to remember our ancient landmarks today.

C ORNERSTONES We do this because God tells us Proverbs 22.28 Proverbs 23.10 Job 24.2

C ORNERSTONES Christopher Columbus His diary when he saw the Natives: They should be good servants and intelligent, for I observed that they quickly took in what was said to them, and I believe that they would easily be made Christians, as it appeared to me that they had no religion.

C ORNERSTONES Columbus They are a people guileless and unwarlike. Men and women go as naked as when their mothers bore them. I hold, most serene Princes, that if devout religious persons were here, knowing the language, they would all turn Christians.

C ORNERSTONES Who were our Founding Colonists? They were Puritans– seeking a “pure religion” in order to rescue Europe. They were the Pilgrims, who drafted the Mayflower Compact They included James Oglethorpe, of Georgia. Maryland, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island.

C ORNERSTONES The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence Most were Christians. Most involved in Church. Jefferson, a complicated man.

C ORNERSTONES George Washington I consider it an indispensable duty to close this last solemn act of my official life by commending the interests of our dearest country to the protection of Almighty God, and those who have the superintendence of them to his holy keeping.

C ORNERSTONES John Adams Inaugural Address if a veneration for the religion of a people who profess and call themselves Christians, and a fixed resolution to consider a decent respect for Christianity among the best recommendations for the public service, can enable me in any degree to comply with your wishes, it shall be my strenuous endeavor that this sagacious injunction of the two Houses shall not be without effect.

C ORNERSTONES Thomas Jefferson I shall need, too, the favor of that Being in whose hands we are, who led our fathers, as Israel of old, from their native land and planted them in a country flowing with all the necessaries and comforts of life; who has covered our infancy with His providence and our riper years with His wisdom and power, and to whose goodness I ask you to join in supplications with me that He will so enlighten the minds of your servants, guide their councils, and prosper their measures that whatsoever they do shall result in your good, and shall secure to you the peace, friendship, and approbation of all nations.

C ORNERSTONES William Henry Harrison (1841) I deem the present occasion sufficiently important and solemn to justify me in expressing to my fellow-citizens a profound reverence for the Christian religion and a thorough conviction that sound morals, religious liberty, and a just sense of religious responsibility are essentially connected with all true and lasting happiness; and to that good Being who has blessed us by the gifts of civil and religious freedom, who watched over and prospered the labors of our fathers and has hitherto preserved to us institutions far exceeding in excellence those of any other people, let us unite in fervently commending every interest of our beloved country in all future time.

C ORNERSTONES John F. Kennedy Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own.

C ORNERSTONES The Presidents of the United States Mentioned God 94 times in their Inaugural addresses. Quoted Micah 6.8 in three different administrations Cited Providence 23 times Most often cited books are the Prophets

C ORNERSTONES Remove not the ancient landmarks. Follow after Josiah or David. II Kings 23.25. On this 4 th of July, we need to recall who we are We need to teach this to our children. We need to defend the truth and the Faith. What will our legacy be? Whose history will we follow?
