Cylinder heads ä ä 1. Clean ä ä 2. Check for Cracks inspect exhaust port and in between valves ä ä 3. Check for Warpage ä ä 4. Inspect Guides for wear ä ä 5. Inspect Seats
3
ä ä 6. Inspect and repair studs and threaded holes ä ä 7. Redo guides ä ä 8. Redo seats ä ä 9. Replace freeze plugs
4
Valves ä ä Keep valves in order unless you are going to replace them all ä ä 1. Clean with a power wire brush ä ä 2. visual inspect face, margin, stem and keeper groove ä ä 3. Mic stem ä ä 4. Grind stem end flat then bevel end ä ä 5. Grind valve face
5
Cylinder heads ä ä 1. Clean ä ä Use a hot tank, Jet spray cabinet then wire wheel in a drill ä ä Use body sander with 80 grit paper to finish the surface
6
2. Check for Cracks ä ä inspect exhaust port and in between valves ä ä Magnafluxing ä ä Dye penetrant
7
3. Check for Warpage ä ä Straightedge and feeler gauge
8
4. Inspect Guides for wear ä ä Bad Valve guides will cause ä ä 1. oil consumption ä ä 2. Poor seating ä ä 3. Valve breakage ä ä Should have.0015-.002 clearance ä ä use small hole gauge and mike or ä ä use pilot to find size of guide
9
5. Inspect Seats ä ä is it a pressed in seat
10
6. Inspect and repair studs and threaded holes
11
7. Redo guides ä ä 1. replacing guides ä ä cast Iron ä ä bronze ä ä 2. Oversize valve stem
12
ä ä 3. Knurling ä ä use plenty of knurling oil ä ä ream wet ä ä clean thoroughly ä ä If valve mikes.341 Ream with a.341 and go up.001 at a time until the valve fits snug but moves free.
13
8. Redo seats ä ä Grind or cut valve seat usually to 1/16 (.0625) ä ä Intake width of a dime ä ä Exhaust width of a nickel ä ä 3 angle valve job 30, 45, 60
14
ä ä Seat must contact valve in middle of face and be even top and bottom all around. ä ä On interference angle seat will only touch top side of valve when cold make sure it is at upper end on face ä ä make sure pilot is tight in the valve guide (hint use pilot to find size of guide)
15
ä ä select proper stones & dress ä ä Do not ruin the diamond ä ä Seat will only be as accurate as the stone redress the stone often ä ä If using cutters make sure they are set up proper
16
9. Replace freeze plugs ä ä use a non harding sealant ä ä (have not tried but heard)if a bolt is rusted in a block melt candle wax on the threads the wax acts as a lube & will allow it to be easily removed
17
Valves - Keep valves in order ä ä 1. Clean with a power wire brush
18
2. visual inspection ä ä inspect face, margin, stem and keeper groove ä ä Check each valve for burned or pitted face caused by; sticky guides, Insufficient tappet clearance, weak springs, clogged coolant passages, warped valve stem, improper ignition or valve timing.
19
ä ä Carbon deposit ä ä worn valve guides, or damage seals
20
3. Mic stem ä ä Mike valve stem for wear if you feel a ridge with fingernail replace it ä ä.002 wear Max. like to keep it to.001 ä ä Chuck valve in valve grinder and check for warp
21
4. Grind stem end flat then bevel the end
22
5. Grind valve face ä ä Make sure you know what angle to grind to 29, 30 - 44, 45 ä ä dress stone often ä ä Grind valve until pits are gone and face is clean and smooth ä ä if margin is less then 1/32 discard valve creates a hot spot
23
ä ä Before grinding valves check valve stem installed height on some engines valves are adjusted by grinding off the valve stem end
24
ä ä SPECIFICATIONS FOR VALVE SPRING INSTALLED HEIGHT ARE NOT PRINTED IN ANY BOOK. PLEASE MEASURE BEFORE GRINDING VALVES. ä ä especially on Pontiac, Cadillac Chrysler, and Ford pinto and Buick engines.
25
Valve springs ä ä Check for tension ä ä check for length (free height) and squareness ä ä check installed height ä ä check for coil bind if after market cam is installed ä ä add shims to correct Don't add over.060 thickness
26
ä ä replace if any defects are found on springs ä ä Check rocker arms for wear ä ä Especially ball swivel type such as Chevy’s. use
27
ä ä Check rocker arm shafts for wear make sure they are installed correctly or oil holes will not line up. ä ä On rocker arm studs if replacement is needed I recommend drilling & tapping to install after market type screw in studs.
28
Valve Stem Seals ä ä Umbrella ä ä Do not reuse seals ä ä O-ring ä ä Positive type ä ä bullet - plastic sleeve
