AKHİSAR -MANİSA/ TURKEY ENERGY FOR LIFE 2012-2014 HYDROENERGY
2
Hydroelectric power is one of the oldest methods of producing electricity. People have used moving water to help them in their work throughout history.
3
People used water energy in different ways Water mill used to grind wheat and get flour
4
Another type of mill
5
Prototype of hydro power plant
7
Hydropower is one of the most important and widely-used renewable source of energy in Turkey
8
DAMS ARE BUILT MAINLY FOR THREE REASONS IN TURKEY REDUCING THE RISK OF FLOOD PRODUCING ELECTRICITY IRRIGATION OF THE AREA (Agriculture is very important in Turkey, more than % 50 of people get on their living from agriculture)
9
*Turkey has great amount of rain fall during a year especially in Autumn and Spring. *Some Eastern Parts and Central Anatolia gets high amount of snow during winter. *These rainfall and snowfall (precipitation) are main water sources of Turkey. They feed the dams and water is stored in these dams. *Whenever you need, you produce electricity.
10
Hydro energy is very important for Turkey. In Turkey, there are 103 actively used hydro electric power plants. Most important dams in Turkey are as follows, 1-Ermenek Barajı6-Karakaya Barajı 2-Keban Barajı7-Atatürk Barajı 3-Berke Barajı8-Hasan Uğurlu Barajı 4-Altınkaya Barajı9-Kığı Barajı 5-Oymapınar Barajı10-Gökçekaya Barajı
11
MAP OF HYDRO POWER PLANTS IN TURKEY
13
First you need to build a dam in front of a river or a lake or somewhere you think you can store water. You need to wait for one year or more to fill in the reservoir of the dam.
14
Use water power and turn the turbine You create electricity with the help of generators.
15
Here is the simulation of a modern dam
16
Minimal pollution Generating electricity with hydro energy is not polluting itself. The only pollution occurs during the construction of these massive power plants. Reliable Hydroelectricity is very reliable energy. There are very little instability in terms of the electric power. As long as there is water in the reservoir, electricity can be generated.
17
Safe There is no gas, no chemical pollutant or no danger of explosion. Flexible You can produce how much electricity you need. Adjusting water flow and output of electricity is easy
18
Hydro energy production does not release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. It is a clean form of energy that everybody could enjoy. After setting up the system, it is free to produce electricity It's renewable - rainfall renews the water in the reservoir.
19
High investment costs Building a dam is expensive, and you have to build the dams at the highest standards Negative Effects on Nature In some cases, you may have to cut the forest In some cases you may have to spoil wildlife habitat
20
Drought or dry seasons affect energy producing negatively because of the lack of water. What is the result now? Briefly, The advantages that people obtain will always be more than the disadvantages.
21
1. Hydroelectricity is a renewable energy source. 2. Hydroelectricity is cheap 3. You can decide how much electricity you need to produce
22
4. You can use the stored water in different fields (irrigation, drinking…etc) 5. Dams sometimes reduce the risk of flood and sometimes you can use the stored water in case of drought 6. It is one of the most reliable and stable energy source. 7. It is one of the cleanest energy
