1st Grade Student PowerPoint By: Allison LeCoq - EDT 610
2
Animal Teeth What do we know about them? They can be sharp and pointy
They help with eating and catching prey Animals don’t have to go to the dentist like people do
3
Animal Teeth What do we want to know about them?
Do they fall out like ours do? How do they take care of them? Do all animals have the same teeth? Which animal has the biggest teeth? How are they like our teeth?
4
Human Teeth What do we know about them?
They need to be brushed and flossed everyday They help with eating and chewing They fall out and grow back in
5
Human Teeth What do we want to know about them? How many are there?
Why are they shaped differently? Why do they fall out?
6
Do animal teeth fall out?
YES! Some animals like cats and dogs have 2 sets of teeth. The baby teeth fall out and are replaced by the adult teeth Other animals, like elephants, have several sets of teeth that fall out all the time!
7
Did You Know? Sharks can lose their teeth every two weeks to replace worn or broken ones? Beavers, guinea pigs and rabbits have front teeth (incisors) that never stop growing? Alligators have a total of 80 teeth that fall out and grow back in all the time!
8
How do animals take care of their teeth?
Pets can have their teeth cleaned at the veterinarian’s office Crocodiles wash their teeth in the water and then sterilize them in the sunlight By eating their prey and then chewing on the bones, animals like wolves help keep their teeth clean
9
How do animals take care of their teeth?
Rabbits, horses and elephants chew grasses, leaves and plants to clean their teeth Animals at the zoo have their teeth cleaned by a veterinarian Animals hardly ever get cavities even though they never go to the dentist!
10
Do all animals have the same teeth?
No! It depends on the animal and what they eat. Plant eaters have more flat teeth called molars to chew and grind with Meat eaters have sharper teeth called canines to catch prey and tear their food with
11
What We learned: Mammals are heterodonts
This means that some of our teeth are shaped different Fish and reptile teeth are all shaped the same, but they come in different sizes

Mammal Teeth

Reptile/Fish Teeth
14
Which animal has the biggest teeth?
The elephant does!!! Their tusks are really long teeth called incisors Can grow to 10 feet long Can weigh Up to 200 pounds
15
So how many teeth do humans have?
We have 2 sets 20 baby teeth 32 adult teeth Why do they fall out? Just like some animals, we are born with two sets of teeth The baby teeth fall out so the adult teeth can grow in
16
Our 3 types of teeth: Incisors Front teeth 2. Canines Pointy teeth
Molars Back teeth *They are all shaped differently to help us eat and digest food
17
How are animal teeth like human teeth?
We both use them to eat food We both have to clean them, just in different ways Animal teeth have different shapes like human teeth do We both lose our teeth We both use our teeth to show emotions (angry, happy)
18
How are animal teeth different from human teeth?
Reptile and fish teeth are all shaped the same – ours are different shapes We don’t use our teeth to kill prey like meat eaters do Some animals have several sets of teeth (sharks, elephants), while we only have two
