Lunar Cycle

What it is ? Regular cycle in the Earth-moon system producing the phases of the moon. Takes 29.5 days to complete one cycle.

Moon Phases Are the changes in the appearance of the moon as viewed from the Earth. Waxing – when the lighted portion of the moon is getting larger. Waning – when the lighted portion of the moon is decreasing in size.

Terms Waxing – lighted part getting larger Waning – lighted part getting smaller

What you see !

Nothing Half of the moon – lighted side is on the right Full circle – the entire moon Half of the moon – lighted side is on the left

Phases of the Moon

Tides Daily rise and fall of the Earth’s waters. Caused by the interactions of the Earth, moon and sun. Gravity is the force exerted on the waters of the Earth to create tides.

Daily Tides Locations have two high and two low tides each day.

Spring Tides Spring tides are especially strong tides. They occur when the Earth, the sun, and the Moon are in a line. The gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun both contribute to the tides. Spring tides occur during the full moon and the new moon.

Neap Tides Neap tides are especially weak tides. They occur when the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun are perpendicular to one another (with respect to the Earth). Neap tides occur during quarter moons.
