Cleanup, Disposal & Clearance Chapter 8 Lead Abatement for Workers Course 1
2
Learning Objectives u In this Chapter you will learn ü The importance of good cleanup ü What cleanup materials to use ü How to do daily cleanup ü How to do final cleanup ü What the clearance levels are ü How to handle waste ü How to dispose of hazardous waste 2
3
When should cleanup happen? u Before u During u After abatement/interim controls 3
6
Lead dust is difficult to remove because: u It is fine u It may not be visible u It sticks to surfaces u It has to be rubbed off u It collects and packs into cracks 6
7
Demonstration: How much “lead dust” does it take to poison a child?
8
Cleanup Materials u Protective suit and respirator u Work gloves and eye protection u Hand-pumped water sprayer u Labeled heavy-duty plastic bags (6 mil poly) u HEPA vacuum cleaner u Cleaner u Sponges, rags, mops u Special containers for hazardous waste (if needed) 7
10
Daily Cleanup u Leave enough time at the end of the day for daily cleanup u Helps keep lead dust levels down u Required by OSHA u Makes final cleanup easier 9
11
Cleanup Steps uWrap up and label large debris 11
13
Cleanup Steps uWet mop the floor; bag and label small debris uHEPA vacuum all surfaces 13
16
Cleanup Steps u Check poly and repair any tears or rips 16
18
Final Cleanup u Three stages 1 Special cleaning HEPA vacuum all surfaces/ Wet Wash/HEPA 2 Painting and resealing 3 HEPA/Wet Wash/HEPA (again) 18
19
Final Cleanup u Phase 1 of final cleanup ü Wait at least one hour before beginning stage one of final cleanup; By then all airborne dust should have settled. 19
33
Final Cleanup u Visual Inspection ü A certified lead-based paint inspector or risk assessor will Check the surfaces that were abated Look for dust 33
35
Final Cleanup u Stage 2: Painting and sealing ü All abated surfaces should be primed or sealed 35
37
Final Cleanup u Stage 3: Repeat special cleaning ü Wait at least 12-24 hours after painting/sealing before beginning stage 3 ü Repeat HEPA vac Wet wash HEPA vac cleaning on all surfaces 37
42
Final Clearance 42
43
CAREFUL CLEANUP = SUCCESSFUL CLEARANCE SAMPLES! 43
45
Waste Disposal 45
46
Waste Disposal u In many States, residential lead abatement or renovation debris is not hazardous waste ü Careful handling of all LBP waste is important! u In some States, the waste must be tested to see if it’s hazardous using the TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leachate Procedure) Hazardous Waste 46
49
Hazardous Waste Disposal u Separate the waste u Store it in special containers in a secure area. u Use a licensed transporter u Take it to a licensed disposal site u Use a hazardous waste manifest 49
