  Set-Up Cornell Notes on IN pages 122-123  Put your summary section on IN Page 123  Title: Path to Victory  Essential Question: What led to the end of the Revolutionary War? Set-Up Cornell Notes

 Moving South  British moved the war to the south because they believed most Southerners were Loyalists  The British also thought Southern slaves would join them because they promised to grant them freedom (this didn’t always happen)  Taking Southern ports would allow the British to move troops back and forth from the West Indies

 Savannah & Charleston  The British were able to take over all of Georgia before moving on to Charleston (Charles Town)  When Charleston surrendered, Americans lost almost their entire Southern army

 New Southern Army  Congress assigned General Horatio Gates to form a new Southern army  With 2,000 new/untrained militiamen, Gates headed to Camden in South Carolina

 The Swamp Fox  Francis Marion AKA Swamp Fox met Gates on his way to Camden and provided the General with important information about South Carolina’s swampland  Gates sent Marion to destroy boats on the river behind Camden to cut off British communications

 Camden  British troops caught Gates & his men just outside of Camden  Gates’ men were unprepared and fled  This huge defeat ended Gates’ term as General & hurt American morale

 After Camden  As the British took American prisoners-of- war (POWs) back to Charles Town, Francis Marion (the Swamp Fox) overwhelmed them and freed the prisoners  Marion also managed to cut the British supply line from Charles Town using guerilla style tactics

 The Tide Turns  Nathanael Greene was put in charge of the Southern Army after Gates was dismissed  Under Greene’s command the American army avoided full- scale battles and allowed the British to chase them about the countryside, effectively wearing them out  When the Americans did fight, they made sure to inflict heavy casualties on the British

 The End of the War  1781- most of the fighting took place in Virginia  British general Cornwallis set up his base in Yorktown so he could easily receive supplies

 Battle of Yorktown  As a French fleet blocked supplies coming into Yorktown, a joint army led by Washington & French General Jean Rochambeau moved towards the British  The joint American-French forces bombarded Yorktown until Cornwallis was forced to surrender (October 19, 1781)  This was the last major battle of the Revolutionary War

 First Repetition  Use our code marking system to:  Highlight important facts  Circle Key Words  Put (*) next to possible test questions  Put (?) next to things you didn’t understand, then- ASK ME!
