Kinds/Types of GEOINT Standards are Governed in this Process?
Why do we have so many standards? Over 1,200 IT Standards in the DoD standards governance process (DISR cited), 173 are GEOINT which are generally categorized for geospatial, motion imagery, & still imagery. These are available to down select from to those necessary to meet a system’s capability requirements. The chart shows the thematic areas for the types of GEOINT standards.

These are the essential set of standards for the acquisition of all DoD systems that produce, use or exchange GEOINT, & when implemented, facilitate the flow of information in support of the warfighter/national security.
The logos at the bottom left represent Standards Development Organizations (international, national, consortia) that develop GEOINT standards through their open, voluntary consensus-based processes. These SDOs publish most of the standards managed in this governance processes – so it’s not all about MIL-Stds of which there are a few. This is important because the US Government is required by public law and Office of Management & Budget (CircularA-119) which establishes policies on Federal use and development of voluntary consensus standards. Many voluntary consensus standards are appropriate or adaptable for the Government's purposes. The use of such standards, as practicable & appropriate, is intended to - Eliminate the cost to the Government of developing its own standards & decrease the cost of goods procured & the burden of complying with agency regulation. - Provide incentives/opportunities to establish standards that serve national needs. -Encourage long-term growth for U.S. enterprises & promote efficiency & economic competition through harmonization of standards. - Further the policy of reliance upon the private sector to supply Government needs for goods and services.
Now that I’ve described how GEOINT standards are developed, adopted, and promoted for the NSG, Mike Reidy for our NSG Interoperability Action Team will describe how NGA is planning to ensure critical DoD/IC programs are compliant with these NSG standards.

ER2: IC Enterprise Standards Baseline & ICS : IC Enterprise Standards Compliance - JWICS
Signed 12/16/ Defines the IC framework for:
Adoption of IC enterprise standards best-suited for achieving the DNI’s goals of interoperability and information sharing
Management of the IC Enterprise Standards Baseline in the IC Enterprise Registry and Repository (ER2) consisting of a minimal, focused, coordinated set of such standards
Compliance and compliance certification of those portions of IC systems and EA-related information technology items funded through the NIP

21. NSG Standards Registry
The National System for Geospatial Intelligence (NSG) Standards Registry supports the discovery, traceability, and lifecycle management of GEOINT Standards that may be used in the development and operation of data- and net-centric GEOINT applications.
The NSG Standards Registry is maintained by NGA for the GWG as a service to the NSG community.
