Alternating PICC and PCD support Songdo, September 2011 Prepared by: ACS, Bundesdruckerei, Infineon WG8 N 1836 TF2 N 705

Rationale  WG8 decided in April 2010 to let investigate the needs of mobile devices using the 14443 interface.  WG8 Convener reported accordingly to the SC17 Plenary in October 2010 and SC17 approved Resolution 639/10: New WG8 PWI into ‘Specifying the specific needs of mobile devices using the ISO/IEC 14443 methods‘ JTC1/SC17 approves the launch of a PWI assigned to WG8, into ‘Specifying the specific needs of mobile devices using the ISO/IEC 14443 methods’, with a view to developing an NP and accompanying working draft. If WG8 do not complete this within a year, they are to report back on progress to the next SC17 plenary.  Due to that Resolution 639/10 WG8 Members have been encouraged to work on the PWI and possibly to submit a Working Draft.  DIN has followed SC17’s offer and presents such a Working Draft, proposed in TF2 N 704 = WG8 N 1835. 19.09.2011Page 2

 Defines two devices  PCDProximity Coupling Device  PICCProximity Card or Object 19.09.2011Page 3 ISO/IEC 14443  PCD shall poll for Type A and Type B PICCs  PICC shall respond to Type A or Type B commands PCDPICC

Market needs  Upcoming devices should support both, PCD and PICC roles of ISO/IEC 14443.  Market increasingly brings up eID applications, which run purely according ISO/IEC 14443. Specifically mobile devices should be able to communicate with eID related contactless objects.  Also finance and transport sectors are interested in letting customers use contactless bank cards, resp. tickets, via mobile devices like mobile phones.  Such devices should be able to communicate with:  PICCs (in PCD role)  PCDs (in PICC role)  another equivalent device (which one is in PICC or PCD role is to be initially negotiated)  => creation of a new device fulfilling above needs 19.09.2011Page 4

19.09.2011Page 5 ISO/IEC 14443 – Extended Proximity Device (EPD)  Extended Proximity Device supports PCD AND PICC Mode  Initial Mode is PICC Mode (either Type A or Type B)  Entering PCD Mode only if no external RF field is detected  In PCD Mode poll for Type A and Type B PICCs  Manual or automatic Mode selection EPD PCD ModePICC Mode

Scenarios  Scenario 1: EPD in automatic mode alternation Set datePage 6 t A B Start tPICC1tPCD tPICC2 tPICCi > tPCD tPICCi ≠ tPICCj EPD PCD Mode PICC Mode A B Check for external RF field RF Off RF On

Scenarios  Scenario 2: EPD and PICC Set datePage 7 t A B tPICC1tPCDtPICC2 EPD PCD Mode PICC Mode RF Off RF On PICC t PICC present Cmd Resp

Scenarios  Scenario 3: EPD and PCD Set datePage 8 t tPICC1tPICC2 EPD PCD Mode PICC Mode RF Off RF On PCD t RF Off RF On Resp Cmd A

Conclusion  Market needs increasingly require that both PCD and PICC Modes should be supported in one device.  in particular in the eID, financial and transport sectors  Actual status of ISO/IEC 14443 & Amendments reflect a maximum of quality, functionality and applicability:  All parts of ISO/IEC 14443 & 10373-6 have been revised.  Amendments (soon published) for: Antenna Classes, EMD, Parameter Exchange, Very High Bit Rates.  Time has come to make available the much attractive 14443 interface to those devices which determine our daily life at a high degree, i.e. mobile phones.  Only minor adoptions in ISO/IEC 14443 are required to achieve that aim by the presented few further definitions proposed in the Working Draft (TF2 N 704 = WG8 N 1835), which lead to a new device category: the Extended Proximity Device (EPD). 19.09.2011Page 10
