Planning A planning session is required for a CME activity and is part of the needs assessment process and helps provide evidence of educational intent. The planning session also provides an opportunity to establish the linkage between needs, objectives, instructional design, and results/outcomes.

Planning Should include: date and time of meeting All in attendance recorded; collect signed disclosures for all planners Describe process by which needs data are used to determine the curriculum for the activity –How needs were gathered –Selection of topics, speakers and method of delivering the educational activity –Do you think this activity fit your learner’s scope of practice? –How will change be measured

CME Application Question 1 What is the physician target audience for the CME activity? What is the physician target audience for the CME activity? Sample Answer Identify the type of health professional the activity is targeting—i.e. house staff, family medicine physicians, ophthalmologist, nurses, neurologist, etc.

CME Application Question 2 What are the professional practice gaps/needs of the target audience that will be addressed? Sample Answer Describe the medical and/or educational reason for the activities.

Example 1 The need for this activity is a result of insufficient treatment plan for psychiatry patients.

Statement of Need/Gap The professional practice gap is the overall need for the educational activity that relates to the target audience and derived from the Needs Assessment Educational needs provide the reason for offering CME activities. They may imply a deficit in knowledge, skills, attitudes and/or behavior among prospective participants

CME Application Question 3 Is it a gap in physician knowledge, competence, or performance? Sample Answer Knowledge –Facts and information acquired by a person through experience or education. Competence –Having the ability to apply knowledge, skills, or judgment in practice if called upon to do so. Performance –What a physician actually does in practice.

Example 2 –The need for this activity is ineligible and insufficient treatment plan for psychiatry patients. –The planners identified a competence need. A strategy to write better treatment plans which also address the ACGME interpersonal and communication skills competency Need/Gap identified

Objectives The provider must communicate the purpose or objectives of the activity so the learner is informed before participating in the activity Objectives of the activity express learning outcomes in terms of physician performance or patient health (i.e. in behavioral terms), and are communicated clearly and consistently to the learner

Objectives All activities require objectives For open discussion-based activities (i.e. M&M, Case conference) objectives for the year are adequate For lecture-based activities (i.e. Grand Rounds) objectives for the year are required as part of the application and then a minimum of a single objective per lecture is also required

Sample Answer After attending this activity, participant will be able to: to improve skill of staff in writing better and clearer treatment plan; or In a simulation of ventricular fibrillation, participant will be able to demonstrate appropriate ACLS protocol until the mannequin shows a normal cardiac rhythm
