Why do we need a gov’t? 1.) Makes order out of chaos O Laws, rules 2.) Protection O Civil liberties, rights 3.) Power O How do we delegate power? Who has the power? Who decides?

Influences of a Republic O System of government where people elect representatives O Representatives manage government for people – common good

Social Contract Social Contract: Agreement between government and the people. O This is what you are giving up to be protected by your government!!! The citizens in a country give their consent to be governed. NO framework of government= chaos/ no protection.

Common Good O Citizens have the power to rule/govern O Citizens delegate or entrust their power by electing leaders to serve their interests. O Work cooperatively to promote common good rather than their self-interests.

Under our Constitution.. We have a Representative Democracy O Popular Sovereignty: People have the highest power (POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!) O People choose leaders or representatives who make laws and run the gov’t for the common good. **How are we a Representative Democracy?
