6. 6 Aims of PCGIAP To maximize the economic, social and environmental benefits of geographic information in accordance with Agenda 21 by providing a forum for nations from Asia and the Pacific to:  Cooperate in the development of a regional geographic information or spatial data infrastructure,  Contribute to the development of the global geographic information infrastructure,  Share experiences and consult on matters of common interest, and  Participate in any other form of activity such as education, training, and technology transfer.

Permanent Committee on GIS Infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific 7 Working group in PCGIAP (1) WORKING GROUP 1: Regional Geodesy  Responsible for the implementation of a regional, precise geodetic network and enhancement of a regional geodetic infrastructure. WORKING GROUP 2: Fundamental Data  Responsible for establishing regional fundamental datasets; mechanisms for sharing these data and fostering an understanding of the benefits in using regional fundamental data.

Permanent Committee on GIS Infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific 8 Working group in PCGIAP (2) WORKING GROUP 3: Cadastre  This new WG aims to facilitate discussion on marine cadastre; undertake a study of land administration issues and facilitate a workshop analyzing the status of cadastre & land administration in member countries. WORKING GROUP 4: Institutional Strengthening  Taken over and broadened the role of the former Taskforce on Development Needs.  Responsible for articulation of member’s GIS related development needs; creation, publication & maintenance of an education & training database; and for sub-regional programs.

Permanent Committee on GIS Infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific 10 PCGIAP believes that a spatial data infrastructure is needed to support the region’s economic growth, and its social and environmental objectives. PCGIAP believes that the region can benefit from better management of its spatial data by taking a perspective that starts from the national level and works up to the regional level. The Asia-Pacific SDI is needed !

Permanent Committee on GIS Infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific 20 Administrative Boundaries Pilot Project Aim : To reveal problems and difficulties encountered by integrating administrative boundary data from member countries Basic Policy for Boundary Dataset  Member nations are entitled to represent their boundaries data in accordance to their own stand on territorial sovereignty  The boundaries data provided to the PCGIAP by the member nations are consistent with those that they provide to the UN,  Member nations have the copyright and the right of explanation for their own boundaries data  Boundaries dataset is separately stored country by country in APSDI Database.

Permanent Committee on GIS Infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific 21 Policy for Data Sharing  The PCGIAP maintain that the Asia-Pacific Regional Fundamental Dataset should be contributed to the Global Map and the GSDI as part of the global datasets,  The member nations entrust the PCGIAP with the responsibility to release their boundaries data while they do so on their own. The boundaries data released in the above two channels are equally copyrighted.  Each country is responsible for preparation and management/maintenance of its own data  For non-commercial purpose, data will be made available at marginal cost.  For commercial purpose, PCGIAP will follow the pricing principles of the member countries.

Specifically the metadata profile is now being updated so as to meet the requirements set forth at ISO/TC2ll in Bangkok, May this year.
