Update of Button Battery Collection in Japan for Proper Treatment of Mercury Hiroki Kunugimoto Chairman of Button Battery Collection Committee Battery Association of Japan TWG Meeting, Jun. 16, 2011 1

Consumers Processing Mercury Deliver Collection Can Collect Spent Button Batteries (Waste in Collection Cans) Report Instruct Transportation Entrust Transportation Register via Internet or FAX Entrust Disposal Voluntary Scheme of Button Battery Collection by BAJ (Started in 2009) FDK Sanyo Schick SII Sony Toshiba Panasonic Hitachi Varta Mitsubishi Siemens Starkey Nexcell Battery Association of Japan (BAJ) Material Maker Sell Valuables Reuse Flow of Spent Products Money Flow Information Flow Approval by the Minister of The Environment 2 Participating Companies (BAJ Members) Secretariat (Button Battery Collection Center) Sponsor Website, Call Center Receive Spent Button Batteries from Consumers Flow of Other Goods Entrustment Entrust Waste Disposal Report Collection Outlets (Cooperative Shops) Transportation (Couriers) Waste Disposal (Recycler) Transport Spent Button Batteries (Waste in Collection Cans) Nothing Landfilled

The Results of FY2010: Cooperative Shops by Category The Number of Cooperative Shops (Cumulative Basis) 3 10,492 Big Growth ! 8,237 The number of collection outlets increased by 2,255 up to 10,492. In particular DIY and grocery showed big growth.

The Results of the First Year: Collection by Shop Category 4 (Unit: kg) 65 % of collected button batteries were from hearing aid related shops.

Transition of the Weight of Collected Button Batteries (kg) 5 The new scheme (by BAJ) has replaced the old one (by each maker) with the result 1.8 times as much as the first year. It is promising that in 2011 the total collection will reach the record high. The Old Scheme (1984-2008) The new scheme started.

Sampling Research 6 We opened 23 cans selected by shop category and districts to check as follows; Weight and number (quantity) by battery type BAJ member or others Mercury free or mercury added (SR) Production Code Date : Feb. 9-10, 2011 Personnel : 15 per day Shop Category: Electric, Mass Merchandiser, DIY, Grocery

Sampling Research: Mixture Ratio by Battery 7 Sampling Research Total Collection Note: The mixture ratio of total collection is a weighted average by using the results of sampling research. The mixture ratio changes depending on the category of shops. Grocery and DIY have relatively high ratio of SR battery. The weighted average shows PR accounts for 69%, LR 22%, and SR 9%.

Sampling Research: Mercury Free Progress in SR 8 Mercury Free Ratio of SR Batteries In the Collected Cans Mercury Free Ratio of SR Batteries In the Collected Cans Breakdown by the Production Year of SR Batteries in the Collected Cans Breakdown by the Production Year of SR Batteries in the Collected Cans On a disposal basis, mercury free ratio doubled from last year up to 16%. It takes SR batteries two to four years to become wastes.
