Popular Sovereignty The right of residents of a territory to vote on the issue of slavery. Kansas Nebraska Act This act would separate the territory west of Iowa into the Kansas and Nebraska territories. Each would practice popular sovereignty. Relationship People in the new territories were to practice popular sovereignty.

The Sack of Lawrence 800 pro-slavery men storm the town of Lawrence. Things were looted burned and destroyed. Kansas Nebraska Act This act would separate the territory west of Iowa into the Kansas and Nebraska territories. Each would practice popular sovereignty. Relationship Border ruffians into Kansas and voted for slavery. Violence erupted between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions.

Pottawatomie Massacre John Brown and some followers pull 5 men from their beds at Pottawatomie Creek and cut their heads off with broad swords. Relationship The Pottawatomie Massacre was in retaliation for the Sack of Lawrence.

Relationship John Brown carried out the Pottawatomie Massacre.

John Brown Anti-slavery fanatic who believed he was called by God to fight the horrible institution of slavery. Bleeding Kansas The Kansas territory was struck with violence. Over 200 people die and people begin to arm themselves. The territory becomes known as “Bleeding Kansas”. Relationship John Brown helps ignite the violence that leads to the Nickname “Bleeding Kansas”.
