PIGEONS IN THE WARS During World War II,a factory in Monmouth, New Jersey made parachutes for pigeons to enable them to be dropped into France. In the world wars,flying pilots carried pigeons in case they had to ditch their plane, they would release the bird for help. Many pilots owe their lives to a pigeon.

DOGS Some dogs also carried pigeons in small pouches on their back. After the dog delivered the message, a soldier would write a reply. The reply was attached to the pigeon that then flew back to home base.

TRAINING IN ACTION Pigeons were trained to fly at night at Ft. Monmouth, NJ. They also trained pigeons to fly 2 ways or make a round trip.

What Happened? What Happened? It was the fall of October 4, 1918 during World War I. In the Argonne Forest, France, the 77 th Infantry Division was surrounded by Germans while being bombed by Americans. Cher Ami was the last pigeon the battalion had. Since they had no radio contact Cher Ami was their last hope.

His Rough Flight Cher Ami flew 25 miles in 25 minutes. He flew through heavy enemy fire. Cher Ami was wounded, but he was determined to finish his mission. When he returned to his loft, he had no eye and his leg carrying the important message was almost gone and he had been shot in the chest

Cher Ami’s Arrival When Cher Ami arrived he was wounded in the torso and the leg with the message on it. Shortly after his arrival the bombing had stopped. Cher Ami had saved over 200 lives.

What happened? President Wilson saved many lives of American Infantry men who were surrounded by the enemy. Carrying an important message, President Wilson was severely injured by enemy fire. He flew through heavy fog, and did not stop until he reached his loft. He fell limp and exhausted. He reached the loft at Ramport after flying 24 miles in 25 min. that means he flew 57 mph. while he was badly hurt.

What happened? On his 52 nd mission he carried a message that helped American artillery destroy enemy guns. Then our troops could go into the Alsacc-Lorraine and capture Beaumont (in France). He was wounded in action losing his left eye from a machine gun bullet and had a gash on the top of his head. The Mocker was wounded two more times as he flew for the military.

Winkie broke free from her cage and flew 129 miles through the night, wet and oil soaked to her base. Although her message capsule was empty, her condition, plus other information, led to the rescue of the crew.
