 Relevant information is directly related to the subject you are reading.  Irrelevant information is unrelated to the subject.

 Essential information is needed to understand a subject fully.  Incidental information does not affect your knowledge of a subject.

 Verifiable information can be proved while unverifiable information cannot be proved.

Senwosret was away from home on duty in the Egyptian army. He was a brave soldier, never showing fear or retreating. He was also very handsome. One day, while preparing for a long journey, he was summoned. A messenger had come to share with Senwosret news from home: his father had been killed. Senwosret was filled with grief and rushed home to claim the land that was rightfully his.

Question: The sentence “Senwosret was away from home on duty in the Egyptian army” is a relevant piece of information. Which sentence is irrelevant? Why?

Answer: The sentence “He was also very handsome” is irrelevant. It is the author’s opinion, and it is unrelated to the main topic of Senwosret claiming the land of his father after his death.

Question: Which of these sentences contains the most essential piece of information? Why? A. “A messenger had come to share with Senwosret news from home: his father had been killed.” B. “He was a brave soldier, never showing fear or retreating.”

The first sentence because it furthers the storyline. “A messenger had come to share with Senwosret news from home: his father had been killed” lets us know what happened next. The other sentence, “He was a brave soldier, never showing fear or retreating” gives us a little background on the character, but would not be considered the sentence with the most essential piece of information.

1. Is the sentence “He even directed the construction of his own tomb at Thebes just after he began his reign” relevant or irrelevant? Explain your answer.

The sentence is relevant because it is directly related to the subject. It backs up the previous sentence: “Some historians believe that Ramses II must have been very proud of himself, because he had many monuments and statues constructed in his own honor.” The following sentence “He even directed the construction of his own tomb at Thebes just after he began his reign” backs up this point.

2. Is the statement “He enjoyed wearing the gold and lapis lazuli adornments made for him as a pharaoh” essential or incidental information? Explain your answer.

“Ramses II probably was not a humble ruler. He enjoyed wearing the gold and lapis lazuli adornments made for him as a pharaoh. He may have been extremely vain about his appearance.”  The sentence is incidental because it doesn’t directly relate to the subject. The article speaks about Ramses II being a vain person, while this sentence merely states that he liked to wear jewelry.  The sentence is relevant because it relates to how he was a vain person. He was concerned about his appearance, so he made sure that he wore jewelry that was made just for him.

Important note!! An opinion can be correct as long as there is a REASONABLE explanation to back it up. This is why deciphering information and adding details is so important in your writing.

3. Is the statement “Ramses II did defend Egypt and made the Kingdom prosperous” verifiable or unverifiable? Explain your answer.

The sentence is verifiable because you can check it in a history book or other resource.

Describe the following:  Relevant information  Irrelevant information  Essential information  Incidental information  Verifiable information  Unverifiable information
