6 Facts about Elizabeth I and Tudor exploration 1 -Elizabeth and her government were looking for new countries in which to trade wool and other goods, and to bring back expensive items e.g. spices and furs to sell at home 2 - Elizabeth gave permission for Sir Walter Rayleigh to establish an English colony in America – she was happy to have new places named after her 3 - Her father and grandfather encouraged Tudors to explore the world 4 - She wanted England to be a world economic power and to restore English pride 5 - Elizabeth enjoyed receiving jewels and silver from sailors because it made her richer 6 - She made England one of the world’s strongest naval powers because she beat the Spanish in the war of 1588, and English shipbuilding was very good under her reign 7 - She loved knowledge, languages and extravagant dress 8 -Elizabeth created trading links with Russia, Morocco, Japan and the Ottoman Empire 9 - She favoured brave explorers like the handsome and dark Sir Walter Rayleigh 10 -She wanted to find a shipping route to the East via Canada because the Spanish controlled other routes – she sent Sir Francis Drake to find a route 11 - She knew that creating more accurate maps of the world was a good thing 12 - She led the Renaissance – a period in history of free enquiry and scientific curiosity 13 – She wanted to defend England from enemy attacks at all times

7 Activities: Group 1 – Watch the cartoon clip of Elizabeth I with Drake and Rayleigh. Then cut out the appropriate quotes she might have used when speaking to Drake before he set sail to circumnavigate the world. Stick them onto your worksheet. Group 2 – Using your own ideas, and the historical facts about Elizabeth I, write the reasons why she encouraged exploration onto your worksheet under ‘personal’ and ‘for England’. Use the pictures of Elizabeth thinking and giving a speech to help you. Group 3 – Same as Group 2 but write a monologue of Elizabeth’s personal reasons and a speech for her ‘for England’ reasons. Remember to organise your work into paragraphs.
