2. © 2004-2007 David Coyote Day 2 (Honey Island Swamp) We spent our week in the heart of the Quarter, but we got out to the swamps for a day to explore the wilder parts of the state. We boarded a flat-bottomed riverboat and made our way though the steamiest swamps. You could smell intrigue and adventure.

3. © 2004-2007 David Coyote Now.. I didn't draw anyone's attention to this, but you'll note that the passengers are being polite...they're trying not to stare at me...though you know they were just dying to!

4. © 2004-2007 David Coyote My word! You should see the size of those 'gators! The Princess said she felt much safer with me at her side. That's understandable.

5. © 2004-2007 David Coyote Deep in the heart of the swamp, the surface of the water was blanketed with a dark green plant called 'duckweed', though I don't think I ever saw a duck. It's so thick that it looks almost like one could get out and walk on it, but you know what's lurking just underneath!

6. © 2004-2007 David Coyote I did see a few turtles sunning themselves on fallen logs, and some long-legged birds that were hunting wiggly things in the water. None were brave enough to challenge my presence. They must have recognized me as the true king of beasts.

7. © 2004-2007 David Coyote You know, I liked the small fishing boats and shrimp catchers we saw along the way. Shrimp. What tasty morsels!

8. © 2004-2007 David Coyote I was enchanted by the Cypress trees, and the way the Spanish Moss drapes from gray limbs. There is something very mysterious about the place if you ask me.

10. © 2004-2007 David Coyote Day 3 The Princess and I went for a ride around the Quarter in one of those mule-drawn carriages. How quaint. You wouldn't believe how many people stopped and stared when they saw me. Even the men, though the other guy tried to explain it away by saying that the men were looking at the Princess. Maybe, but stare they did.

11. © 2004-2007 David Coyote We stopped in for some liquid refreshment at a place called the Blacksmith's Shop down on the far end of Bourbon Street. Talk about atmosphere! I was so thirsty that I had a couple of drinks. That raised eyebrows; believe me! (Look at that expression on his face! I had to limit the other guy's drinking. He simply isn't very good at handling alcohol.)

12. © 2004-2007 David Coyote That's his problem, though, not mine. I had another and stayed as sober as a judge! What? Hasn't anyone ever seen a Warthog? Really…I must get out more often. Well, a few revelers apparently recognized me an asked for my autograph. Naturally I obliged!

13. © 2004-2007 David Coyote We wandered around the Quarter that afternoon while the Princess pointed out interesting landmarks and old buildings. (Seems to me that almost everything there was old...including my biographer.)

14. © 2004-2007 David Coyote In the middle of the picture below is one of the oldest buildings in the Quarter, The Napoleon House. A gentleman named Chuck Taggert says: "Napoleon House is named for the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The story behind the place is that a group of New Orleanians, including Nicholas Girod, mayor of New Orleans and the pirate Jean Lafitte planned to mount a rescue mission to the island of St. Helena in 1821, where Napoleon had been imprisoned since his defeat at Waterloo in 1815. They purchased a house on Chartres and St. Louis Streets that was to be the Emperor's home while they figured out how to get him back to France. Unfortunately, Napoleon died on St. Helena before they could execute their plan."

16. © 2004-2007 David Coyote Well...the most amazing thing! In the heart of the Quarter, plants seem to grow just about anywhere! These simply popped right out of the sides of the building!

17. © 2004-2007 David Coyote I was very impressed with the architecture and the variety of colors...and the use of these old gas lamps. They add a quaint touch of a time gone by. Yet...there's no time like the present for a snack! (I think I'll just have a few more beignets while the other guy corrects his typing mistakes. He is so slow!)
