3 Introduction What is MMS? The Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is as its name suggests the ability to send and receive messages comprising a combination of text,sound,images & as technology improves, video to MMS capable handsets. MMS is a more advance version of the current SMS (Short Messaging Service) & Nokia’s smart messages. MMS is a standard set by 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), so MMS will be used by all mobile vendors.

4 Step by step how to use MMS Use MMS handset or via internet site to compose a MMS message, which can be a combination of text, picture and sound. Send the message to another MMS phone. The message is send to the MMS server. The MMS server sends a SMS to informs the recipient about the MMS Message. The recipient can choose either to delete, read on another time or to download the message. Once the message is downloaded, the recipient can view on they MMS phone. Www.nokia.com/mms/index.html

5 Technical Details Main Components: MMS nodes (technical equipment) in the current network. MMS Server - stores & forwards MMS messages. MMS Relay - making connection between MMS servers on other networks possible. High speed data channel (GPRS, EDGE & 3G) Current Network - GSM (Global system for mobiles) data rate- 9.6kb/s GPRS (General Packet radio service) data rate - 115kb/s Future - EDGE & 3G (Currently being tested in labs) EDGE - (Enhanced data rates for global evolution) DR- 385kb/s 3G- (Third generation) DR - >2Mb/s

7 Conclusion Who’s involved? System vendors: Ericsson (Sony Ericsson), Nokia, Motorola. Network Operators: Vodophone, Orange, Btcellnet, 121. Ericsson & Nokia are the main developers of MMS components (MMS server & Relay), both Vendors have already demonstrated MMS technology at a live convention (CeBIT 2001). Ericsson are the 1st to bring out MMS capable Handsets. Ericsson’s T68

8 Nokia has also developed MMS Handset (Nokia 7650), but the release date is still to be announced. MMS should be available by 2002. Future - instant video mail, live video conferencing, cartoon clips. All possible with EDGE & 3G Japan - 3G in use. Handset capable of recording & sending video messages.
