1 Welcome to FUTUREMED’S PowerPoint demonstration of the Discovery-2 spirometer.

2 Powerpoint will automatically advance this presentation, so you can just sit back and watch.
If you want to stop the presentation and go backward or forward, here are the instructions......

3 To go back to a slide, press either:
Left Arrow ( ) or the Up Arrow ( ) To move ahead, press either: Right Arrow ( ) or Down Arrow ( )

4 Each slide you are about to see has already been timed to display for approximately 7 seconds. It will then advance to the next page.

5 Discovery-2 is a compact spirometer with a large graphic display and an internal printer.

6 Its small size and many onboard features make Discovery-2 ideal for testing in an office, at the bedside, or on the road. Memory Real-time graphs Alphanumeric keyboard Internal Printer

7 Real-time graphs Tests are displayed as real-time flow/volume and time/volume graphs, so you can encourage patient effort and make sure tests are performed properly.

8 Alphanumeric keyboard
Patient information and physicians notes can be typed in, for personalized reports.

9 Internal Printer Discovery-2’s internal printer produces complete reports including graphs, measurements and interpretations.

10 Memory Hundreds of test results can be stored in memory for future reference, or for downloading to Discovery-2’s database on a computer.

11 Getting Started

12 Before using Discovery-2 you will need to set up the turbine flow meter.
Insert the clear turbine all the way in the handset until it sits in the very end.

13 If it is not already connected, plug the handset in to the port called Turb./Raw in the back of the spirometer .

14 To turn Discovery-2 on, press the Power/Menu button
To turn Discovery-2 on, press the Power/Menu button. Hold it down for a second or two.

15 Discovery-2 will boot up similar to a laptop computer, and the Main Menu will be displayed.

16 The Main Menu (and all other Menus), can be navigated using the Up/Down and Left/Right arrows.

17 Alternatively, you can choose options from the Menu by pressing the corresponding number on the keyboard. For example 1 for Patients, 2 for Options, etc.

18 Whether your operate Discovery-2 using arrows or the alphanumeric keyboard, confirm your choice by pressing the green arrow.

19 Testing is generally completed in the following 3 easy steps:
1) Patient information is entered 2) The test maneuver (usually FVC) is performed 3) A report is printed and/or stored

20 Step 1 Entering Patient Information

21 Predicted values in spirometry are based on a patient’s age, sex, race, height and, in some cases, weight. To test a patient, begin by typing in patient data.

22 To enter patient data, select:
1. Patients 1. New

23 Discovery-2 automatically assigns an ID number to each patient
Discovery-2 automatically assigns an ID number to each patient. You can use the existing number or erase it using the back arrow, then type in another number.

24 Use the down arrow to move from one field to the next.
In fields where a choice is to be made, such as , use the right-left arrows to select. Note that height must be entered in two fields (for example, a 5’3” individual’s height is entered as 5 ft - 3 in).

25 When you are finished entering patient data, press to confirm.
Smith William ABC Oil Company NO 195 Referred by Dr. Jones When you are finished entering patient data, press to confirm.

26 Step 2 Performing the maneuver

27 Once a new patient has been entered into the spirometer, a second menu will appear on screen. The patient’s name will be on the bottom of the screen. This menu provides several testing options.

28 FVC is the most commonly performed spirometry maneuver.
To perform an FVC test, the patient inhales maximally, then blasts the air out into the sensor as quickly, completely and forcefully as possible. For inspiratory information (a “full loop”), the patient completes the maneuver by inhaling through the sensor completely and with full force.

29 Start by instructing the patient as follows:
Seal your lips around the mouthpiece or filter. Take 2-3 normal breaths. Inhale completely and fill your lungs. Blow out as hard as you can, and keep going until you can’t exhale any more! (for a full loop, continue) Inhale as fully and with as much force as possible.

30 When the patient is ready to start the test:
Select 1.Test. Press 1 again for 1.FVC Pre

31 The Flow/Volume and Time/Volume graphs will set up on screen.

32 As the patient performs the maneuver, these graphs will be created on screen in real time.

33 At the end of the test, quality-control messages will let the operator know how the test compares with industry standards.

34 (Other messages include “blast out harder”, “blow out longer”, “avoid coughing”.) These messages can be disabled.

35 To accept the test, press If you are not satisfied and would like to repeat the maneuver, press to discard the test.

36 The flow/volume graph and core spirometry results will be displayed on screen.

37 The ATS recommends at least 3 efforts. To repeat the test, press 1
The ATS recommends at least 3 efforts. To repeat the test, press 1.Start. To save it and exit, press 2.Save & Exit To exit without saving the test, press 0.Exit w/o Saving.

38 After the second effort, both tests will be displayed, and the “best test” will be identified. You can repeat the maneuver as often as desired by pressing 1.Start

39 Up to 3 efforts can be studied on the screen at one time. Press 2
Up to 3 efforts can be studied on the screen at one time. Press 2.Save & Exit to save the desired effort and continue.

40 You will be prompted to choose a maneuver to store
You will be prompted to choose a maneuver to store. Press the number corresponding to the desired effort.

41 Step 3 Storing and/or Printing Results

42 The test selected at the end of the testing session will be automatically stored and can be retrieved and printed at any time. You will now be ready to continue with other maneuvers, test another patient, or print a report.

43 To print the report, select 2.Print

44 Choose 1.Selected Test to print the effort highlighted.

45 Choose 2.Report to print the best of all maneuvers performed (including pre & post FVC, SVC & MVV) on the highlighted date.

46 Discovery-2 can be connected directly to a USB printer.
When such a connection is made, the “Print” option will be directed to the external printer, yielding full page, plain paper reports. Please refer to the Discovery-2 manual for information and compliance issues about this feature.

47 Other Features

48 Pre vs. Post Medication FVC
Discovery-2 can be used to study the patient’s response to bronchodilator therapy and the possibility of the reversibility of airway disease .

49 To perform a post medication test, select 1.Test 2.FVC Post BD

50 Note that the third option, 3
Note that the third option, 3.FVC Post BC, refers to the bronchodilator challenge routine, and should not be selected here.

51 The Post FVC maneuver is identical to the regular FVC maneuver, and can be repeated and saved in the same manner.

52 A saved effort will be stamped with the test date and saved in the patient’s record.

53 To study it, highlighted the test and, if desired, choose 2.Print.

54 Bubbles Pediatric Incentive
Children and adults find the Discovery-2 handset easy to hold and handle.

55 The Bubbles pediatric incentive can displayed at your discretion to encourage patients, for optimal results.

56 The “bubble” is determined by the patient’s predicted FVC
The “bubble” is determined by the patient’s predicted FVC. As the patient exhales, the blue circle expands in real time. The patient’s goal is to fill the circle.

57 Cost Effective Spirometry
Discovery-2 is used with your choice of mouthpieces or filters. This lets you control the cost and quality of disposables.
