5 What is it? This prepares students for employment in a healthcare setting as a sonographer. Some of the duties of a Medical sonographer are to perform abdominal, gynecological, fetal, and vascular exams Program information: The DMS program is two years long, and awards the Associates of Applied Sciences Degree. The first year of college is strictly on the UAA Campus. The second year is working full-time at clinical training sites around the state. It is very competitive, only ten students are admitted each application period. Unfortunately, there are no advancement opportunities for this program, you are kind of stuck being a Sonographer, and that’s it. Pay: $64,000 median In anchorage it’s about $58,000

6 Work Places.. AAS Medical Sonographer Works in : Hospitals, where most newly graduated sonographers will work. Imaging centers Private physician offices. AAS Radiologic Technologist Works in: Hospitals physician offices specialty treatment centers privately-owned imaging centers traveling companies sales research education. Both work places are always very clean and sanitary

7 Similarities & Differences Similarities: Work Place(hospitals, clinics) Both take pictures inside the body The number of years in college is about the same. (Including clinical hours) Differences: Pay Pre-requisites Sonographers also take videos, Radiographers do not Workplace (Sales research, education)

8 Which would I choose…? I would choose the path of a Radiologic Technologist. There are more advancement opportunities, and I eventually plan to become a Radiologic Assistant. This career choice is something very important to me because both of my grandfathers have passed away from cancer, and being an RA lends me the opportunity to work on chemotherapy along with other things to help people. I will be attending the University of Alaska, Anchorage in the Fall of 2013 for a degree in Radiologic Technology and a double minor in World History and Instrumental Music.
