Confidential VMware Consolidated Backup Released in Q3/2006 Provides off host functions to backup provider Included in all “paid” versions since 3.5 Requires Proxy Server Command line utility package (VCB Framework) Supports file and full image backup on LAN, FC, iSCSI, NFS storage Note: VCB will no longer be supported in any release after vSphere 4.0. Existing versions will be supported on 4.0 and earlier. VCB

Confidential Available integration options for VCB Custom using generic scripts For the savvy customer or low end partner Typically does not scale Can be used with the Windows scheduler VMware / 3 rd party script based integration modules VMware developed Partner developed Certain limitations Requires separate installer 3 rd party full UI integrations Seamless installation UI integrated Close to physical experience Highly customizable VCB + vStorage APIs Hybrid approach of both technologies Can be leveraged while moving from VCB to VADP Potential issues with mixed environment Potential support issues

Confidential vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP) What are vStorage APIs for Data Protection? vStorage APIs are a set of public developer tools that allow enhanced access to virtual disks and the data within them. Comprised of the following VMware components vSphere SDK Virtual Disk Development Kit vSphere SDK Web Services API to access and manipulate vSphere objects Virtual Machine, Datastore, Hosts, etc. C# or Java interfaces, Web Service Virtual Disk Development Kit Originally released in 2008, evangelized in 2007 A set of C libraries used to access (read/write) virtual disks Also includes mount utilities(APIs) to mount file systems to read and write data

Confidential vStorage APIs for Data Protection Next evolution of VMware Data Protection Native integration with backup application Backup server is now proxy equivalent Supports Windows and Linux Improved Functionality Support all storage architectures for backup and restore Includes incremental and differential image backup (Changed Block Tracking) Goal is to make virtual backup better than physical VADP

Confidential Adoption Strategy Points Why should VMware partners adopt this new technology? Partner Motivations Remove customer confusion Greater backup functionality for their customers Partner has finer control of what to back up and how Enable zero downtime backup Create a better user experience Have technology in place to support other VMware products Starts the development effort for cloud backup, acceleration Avoid the need for additional code in the VM for backup purposes Less intrusive upgrade process since no code is in the guest

Confidential Who loves vStorage APIs for Data Protection? This has been our largest and most feature-rich release we have attempted on the Backup Exec product line and introduces a large number of positive changes for our Backup Exec Agent for VMware. Peter Imming, Product Manager, Backup Exec Symantec We are integrating the vStorage APIs into our 4.2 product as we speak. We will be kicking VCB to the curb and NOT using it in our 4.x products! Jason Mattox, Chief Technical Officer, Vizioncore
