How is ict affecting Manufacturing?
2
So what is Manufacturing? The process of making a raw material into a finished product; especially in large quantities.
3
Some of the things Ict creates in manufacturing computerised systems robots electronic control boards computer scanning equipment. computer-driven embroidery machines computerised equipment Photographs Prototypes CAD/CAM Industrial Production Plans (including quality control Display Boards Power Point presentations Spread sheets
4
The advantages reduces the number of stages needed increases the number of jobs Makes systems more efficient Less mistakes are made due to better quality control In fast moving consumer goods industries, ICT has enabled companies to move from a product focus to a customer focus by being able to manufacture more closely to customer preferences/requirements rather than to production possibilities. In globally oriented and highly competitive industries where Australian–based companies are essentially price takers, businesses need to keep up with the technological change and developments in order to stay in the market. In monopoly–oriented industries, companies choose carefully those technologies that are going to impact on bottom line performance and create shareholder value
5
The disadvantages Purchasing the network cabling and file servers can be expensive. Managing a large network is complicated, requires training and a network manager usually needs to be employed. If the file server breaks down the files on the file server become inaccessible. E-mail might still work if it is on a separate server. The computers can still be used as stand alones. Viruses can spread to other computers throughout a computer network. There is a danger of hacking, particularly with wide area networks. Security procedures are needed to prevent such abuse.
6
Technology in car manufacturing Rolls Royce Robots are utilised widely throughout the Hi-Tech factory to monitor production, construct and finish cars Robots are far more accurate, don’t require breaks, can work 24/7 and rarely have a day off sick Material Replenishment Process (MRP) is monitored by computer systems which run the stock control ensuring that all the parts required for the assembly process are in stock and that the correct components are in the correct part of the plant at the correct time

Finally how does ict affect the manufacturing of chocolate CAD packages to produce 3 ‘D’ photo realistic images In testing designs with focus groups the images are far more realistic than prototypes Generates feedback from retailers with little outlay Easy and quick to make changes to designs and cost effective in accessing further feedback Incorporates materials technology in packaging utilising flowrap packaging and replaces foil and band Replace processes with modern machinery monitored by computers previously undertaken by hand, processes are faster and the workforce has been cut by 50% All manufacturing is completed undercover and quality control is monitored by computer systems
