Implementation of advanced technical solutions of St.Petersburg Vodokanal in the city Vladimir Gvozdev Deputy Head of Water Supply Department, Engineering and Innovation Center SUE “Vodokanal of St.Petersburg” European Economic Congress Katowice, 14-16 May Water supply system and water management

safe portable water in terms of epidemiology and radiology; minimal environmental impact thanks to the use of environmentally safe chemicals and technologies; responsibility before customers at present and in future through solicitous attitude to the natural resources; energy-efficient processes; well-qualified personnel guarantying accident-free, effective operation; interaction with customers and awareness-raising work. Safe water supply as a factor of favorable living environment

St.Petersburg Water Supply System Water Supply Zones of Main Water Treatment Plants Kolpino WTP Kronshtadt WTP Zelenogorsk WTP Lomonosov WTP Northern water supply zone (589.0 km2) Southern water supply zone (727.6 km2) Central water supply zone (136.5 km2) Main WTP Northern WTP Volkovskaya WTP Southern WTP WTP – water treatment plant Dudergofskaya WTP Description of the water supply system as of 01.01.2012 Ø water supply sources: the Neva River– 98% underground water and mixed source – 2% Ø number of water treatment plants – 9 Ø number of boosting pumping stations – 200 Ø length of water networks– 6 665 km Ø daily average water supply from WTPs – 1,922.900 m3/day. Service area – 1,453.1 km 2 Served population – 4.8 mio people. Specific water consumption 2011– 168 l/day*person

Water Consumption by the population of St.Petersburg Specific water consumption in St.Petersburg, l/person*day l/person

Provision of guaranteed safe portable water to the population of St. Petersburg - An effective water disinfection system is absent, - 78% of water is treated in a single stage process, - Environmentally hazardous chemicals (chlorine, ammonia) are applied, - Water treatment technology from specific contaminants is absent. - Replacement of chlorine with sodium hypochlorite at 75% of the facilities 2015 - Implementation of the UV disinfection at 72% of the facilities - Implementation of a system to ensure water supply security after detection of toxic substances 2009 2008 2006 2005 2003 2011 Increase in the percentage of water samples meeting the standards at WTP outlets - Reconstruction of 500, 800 and 250 thous.m3/day WTPs - Complete elimination of chlorine - UV disinfection of water is 100% - Replacement of ammonia with ammonium sulfate - 350,000 m3/day new water treatment block - Optimization of the water supply network operation

- Zones of possible chemical contamination Main WTP (20 t.) Volkovskaya WTP (10 t.) Southern WTP (25 t.) Northern WTP (25 t.) Kolpino WTP (20 t.) 2. Introduction of the integrated two- step water disinfection system: Combination of the chemical (reagents) and physical (UV) disinfection methods 1. Transition to water disinfection technologies with using safe eco-friendly chemicals Chlorine Sodium hypochlorite Zones of possible chemical territory contamination in St. Petersburg after the chlorine container accident at WTPs as of 2003 The environmental safety of portable water at the WTPs of St. Petersburg before and after 2003 UV system Guarantee of the epidemiological water safety; “Closer to consumer” principle; Full automation of disinfection processes; The largest in Russia; Home-grown technology.

Sodium hypochlorite production plant at Northern WTP. Sodium hypochlorite production at Southern WTP Sodium hypochlorite production at Northern WTP Year of commissioning– 2008. Designed capacity of the plant– 480 tons/day. Year of commissioning – 2006. Designed capacity of the plant – 720 tons/day.

The capacity of New K-6 Block is 350,000 m3/day Technologies:  Pre-ozonation  Coagulation  Sedimentation  Filtration  Two-stage disinfection (sodium hypochlorite with ammonium sulfate and ultraviolet) Facilities:  Ozonation chamber  Mixing chamber  Lamellas  Dual media filters  Clean water reservoirs New water treatment block at Southern WTP (K-6 Block)

Reconstruction of Zelenogorsk WTP. Practical implementation of state- of-the-art iron and manganese removal technologies At Zelenogorsk WTP : filters are reloaded and the new drainage system TRITON is installed, the water aeration system is upgraded, the new iron and manganese removal technology is implemented at the 2nd process stage with using catalytic oxidation of iron and manganese compounds in pressure filters, modern chemical dosing systems and the process monitoring equipment are installed, technical processes at the plant are automated, water is disinfected by sodium hypochlorite.
