Graphing 101 – A Review It’s time we got this graphing thing straight!
2
Title Should be informative enough to allow graph to “stand alone” “The effect of …(IV)… on …(DV)…” Good: “The effect of fertilizer on the height of pea plants” Bad: “Plant Growth” No periods! This is not a sentence!
3
Axes X-axis Horizontal; “across” the bottom Independent variable Ex. Year, day, groups Y-axis Vertical; in the “Y” itself Dependent variable What is being measured/counted
4
(Axes, cont.) Consistent intervals Can jump from zero with break, but then must be consistent Appropriate scale? Labels with METRIC UNITS!
5
Data Points, Lines, Bars, etc. Accurate Neat
6
Legend/Key Is it needed? Clearly labeled Neat
7
The Effect of Fertilizer on Plant Height Time (days) Label? (Units?)
8
How tall was the 2 g pea plant at 25 days? Interpolating- getting information from a graph from between data points
9
The Effect of Fertilizer on Plant Height Time (days) Label? (Units?)
10
How tall will the 0 g pea plant be at 45 days? Extrapolating-getting information from my graph from beyond the plotted data points Can only do this if you see a trend.
11
The Effect of Fertilizer on Plant Height Time (days) Label? (Units?)
12
What kind of graph should you use? Line graphs Continuous data You CAN interpolate and extrapolate! Bar graphs Discontinuous/discrete data Separate groups being compared
13
What kind of graph? The Effect of Heat Source over Time on the Temperature of a Rock Line
14
The Effect of Heat Source on the Temperature of a Rock Time (minutes) Temperature ( ◦ C)
15
What kind of graph? Number of siblings your classmates have Bar
16
Title? Number of Siblings Number of Students
17
Is this next graph the appropriate type of graph for the data shown? Why? Why not?
18
The Effect of Fertilizer on Plant Height Time (days) Height (cm)
19
Let’s graph! You will need: Ruler Pencil/Colored Pencils Calculator Some data… p.79
