Our team: The TME Research and Development Center (R&D) is responsible for the planning, development and production of attractive, superior quality cars matching the European market requirements. TME R&D’s mission is to strengthen the Toyota brand image in Europe by developing cars tailored to European customers taste & needs. The Engine Application focuses on engine optimization for tailpipe emissions, fuel consumption, NVH, performance and drive-ability. This is mainly achieved by adjustment of engine control unit (ECU) software control parameters. For this purpose we perform vehicle tests on test track and roller test bench (Chassis-Dynamometer). The basic optimization of the engines is performed on our engine test benches. Your project: Shorter vehicle development times, increasing engine control system complexity and ever stricter legal & customer requirements lead to increasing workload in the engine optimization process. To cope with this increasing workload without inflating the resource requirements, we develop new innovative methodologies which can accelerate the development process and improve the engine calibration quality. Calibration development and validation needs to cope with large amount of testing data. To increase our organisation efficiency, we d like to establish an integrated tool chain (ex: matlab or visual basic based) achieving following both targets: 1)Process and visualize mileage accumulation data: purpose is to propose and implement a comprehensive visualisation of key engine / post treatment behaviour indicators. It is also expected to use the visualisation to point out key problem from mileage accumulation and proactively prevent any failure 2)Develop tool chain for On-Board-Diagnosis -OBD- application: Purpose is to be able to confirm the robustness of an OBD calibration, using the data from the engine ECU. Many vehicles are used during the development by different teams. From these vehicles a lot of data can be collected for checking the OBD robustness. The data from these vehicles are valuable information for the development of high quality engines. Your task: Mileage accumulation visualisation 1.Propose a comprehensive way of visualising powertrain & exhaust post treatment system from mileage accumulation test 2.Define a standard of mileage accumulation data visualisation and validate on on-going projects Tool chain for OBD application 1.Propose a suitable method of validating the robustness of an OBD calibration during the development process 2.Define a standard for this robustness validation Place of internship:Zaventem Technical Centre, Belgium Duration : 5 months Starting : January / March 2009 Your assets: Student in last year of study; Engineering, Exact sciences, Mathematics, Computer science, ….. Affinity with statistics (experimental test design), and software development. Interest for engine and vehicle development in general. Flexible team player Open personality able to work in an independent way, hands-on mentality Fluent in English, any other European language is a plus. Good knowledge of Matlab software Internship Research and Development- Engine Application
