Metric/Imperial Measures Milli- means part, so 1000 millimetres (mm) = 1 metre. Centi- means part, so 100 centimetres (cm) = 1 metre. Kilo means 1000 (thousand) so 1 kilogram = 1000 grams Mega- means 1 000 000 (million) so 1 megawatt = 1 000 000 watts

Metric Measures  What do you think 1 kilometre means?  How many centimetres in a kilometre?  How many millimetres in a kilometre?

Imperial Measures These are somewhat complex. First; length  12 inches = 1 foot  3 feet = 1 yard  1760 yards = 1 mile  So, how many feet in a mile?  How many inches in a mile?  There use to be other units between some of these that were used a lot…

Imperial Measures  Liquid measures  20 fluid ounces = 1 pint  2 pints = 1 quart  8 pints (4 quarts) = 1 gallon  So, how many fluid ounces in a gallon?

Imperial Measures  Weight (mass) measures  16 ounces (oz) = 1 pound (lb)  14 pounds = 1 stone (st)  112 pounds = 1 hundredweight (cwt)  20 hundredweight (cwt) = 1 ton  So, how many pounds in a ton?  How many stones in a ton?  How many ounces in a ton? If you think this is difficult; there use to be units less than an ounce and other measurements between some of these..

Approximate Conversions  1 kilogram is approximately 2.2 pounds  1 pound is approximately 450 grams  1 gallon is approximately 4.5 litres  1 pint is approximately 0.5 litres  8 kilometres is exactly 5 miles!!!!!  1 inch is approximately 2.5 centimetres

Knowing these conversions you should be able to work out many everyday examples of conversions, such as: metres / yards, miles / kilometres or kilograms / pounds.

Example: – You have just filled up the family car with 26.45 litres of fuel. The mileage covered since the last fill-up was 190 miles. Using 4.5 litres is approximately 1 gallon, work out the fuel consumption in miles per gallon. First convert litres to gallons (give at least 6 places) 26.45 ÷ 4.5 = gallons – Now divide 190 miles by 5.88 gallons (rounded!!) 190 ÷ 5.88 = miles per gallon (mpg) This is rounded to …………..… to 1 d.p. 5.8777777 32.3 mpg 32.3129251

Change the following to their metric or imperial equivalents: 1.23 lbs 2.15 miles 3.5 ounces 4.6 pints 5.17 kg 6.24 km 7.3 litres 8.15 cm 10.5 kg 24 km 125 g 3.4 litres 37.4 lbs 15 miles 5.25 pints 6 inches

More questions 1.Alec is 5 feet 8 inches tall. What is this in cm? 2.Mary weighs 7 stone 11 lbs. What is this in kg? 3.A drink container holds 32 pints when full. It dispenses 200 ml each time. How many drinks can be obtained? 4.Petrol costs 83.6p per litre. How much is this per gallon? 170 cm 49.5 kg 91 drinks £3.76
