5 The Goals of WRAP Promote recovery, wellness and stability Reduce the need for use of costly/intrusive treatment Develop control over symptoms Promote understanding of mental health Reduce stigma Raise hope and increase working towards wellness Promote personal responsibility and empowerment.

6 Where does WRAP come from? WRAP is a self-help system Developed by people with personal experience of mental health problems Struggling to develop healthier lifestyles WRAP developed by and promoted by the Copeland Centre for Wellness and Recovery – Mary Ellen Copeland. www.mentalhealthrecovery.com

7 What does WRAP involve? The development of a written plan By the person who will use it With the help of family, friends & mental health workers Completed at a pace that suits the person It may be a lengthy process – but then all good things take time That specifies what needs to happen, when, where how and with whom the person will do things To get and stay well.

8 WRAP contents 1 Wellness- An overview of how I am when I am well. Wellness toolbox – strategies to promote wellbeing Daily maintenance – the kinds of things the person does or needs to do to get well and stay well Relapse triggers – the kinds of things that trigger distress and symptoms

9 WRAP contents 2 Early warning signs – the early signs of distress and what to do if they develop What things look like when things are breaking down. Crisis plans – what needs to happen if the person becomes unwell. Post Crisis plan- To evaluate and plan for taking back responsibilities.

10 Conclusion WRAP is an approach to self care that emphasises – hope and working to get and stay well WRAP was developed by users of the mental health services WRAP is empowering WRAP encourages the person to make choices and work out what works for them.
