The French Revolution of 1830 Introduction When the Congress of Vienna restored Louis XVIII to the French Throne, he issued a constitution. The charter of French Liberties. a.) It created a two- house legislature. b.) It allowed limited freedom of the press. Louis still avoided absolutism, but retained much power. Sources of Unrest A. Ultraroyalists 1.) despised constitutional government 2.) wanted to restore the old regime 3.) included high clergy and émigré nobles B. Liberals 1.) wanted to extend suffrage and win a share of power for middle class citizens. C. Radicals 1.) yearned for a republic. D. Working Class 1.) wanted a good pay and bread they can afford.

The July Revolution A. Charles X 1.) rejected the idea of the charter. 2.) suspended the legislature 3.) limited voting rights 4.) believer in absolutism B. Liberals & Radicals 1.) threw barricades across narrow streets 2.) fired on soldiers and threw stones and roof tiles. 3.) frightened Charles X and he fled to England. 4.) radicals insisted republic; liberals insisted on constitutional monarchy. 5.) The chamber of Deputies chose Louis Philippe as king (had supported the revolution of 1789).

The “Citizen King” A. Louis Philippe 1.) nicknamed “citizen king”, because he owed his throne to the people. 2.) got along with middle class. 3.) Liberal politicians and professionals filled his government. 4.) extended suffrage only to wealthier citizens 5.) many people cannot vote 6.) policies favored the middle class
