Definition Definition: is a statement that explains the meaning of a term (a word, phrase, or other set of symbols) Sentence: One way to clarify words I do not know when I read is to look up the definition of the word in a dictionary. Action: pretend to open a dictionary to look up the definition of a word you do not know.

Description Definition: a list of properties or adjectives that could be used to identify a person, place, or object Sentence: I found the book my friends were looking for, just by the description they gave of its cover. Action: Choose one of these students, give a description of that student and see if someone raising a quiet hand can tell you who you are talking about!

Sentence I see a dog. Do you see that dog? Stop that dog!
Definition: grammatical unit of one or more words that expresses an independent statement, question, request, command, exclamation Sentence: Every sentence starts with a capital letter. Action: Quietly whisper a sentence to your neighbor explaining why this dog is running. I see a dog. Do you see that dog? Stop that dog!

Capitalize Definition: to write or print using upper case letters
Sentence: You must always capitalize the beginning of every sentence as well as names or proper nouns. Action: Use you finger to write your name in the air using only lower case letters. Then “erase” it and write it correctly by capitalizing the first letters of your name.

Capital Definition: the upper case letters of the alphabet
Sentence: I know you are so tired of me telling you, all sentences and proper nouns must start with a capital letter! Action: You, quietly remind your neighbor that all sentences and proper nouns start with a capital letter!

Capitol Definition: A building or complex of buildings in which a federal and /or the state legislature meets Sentence: The United States Capitol is the meeting place of the United States Congress. Action: Quietly whisper to your neighbor the city where you will find the United States Capitol building.

Close Definition: shut; not open
Sentence: Please close the door when you come in from outside. Action: Pretend to close a door and lock it.

Clothes Definition: garments that cover the body
Sentence: My mom bought me new clothes for school. Action: Quietly point to the garments you are wearing and whisper, “These are my favorite clothes.”

Threw Definition: the past tense of throw
Sentence: The first boy threw his ball and missed. The second boy threw his ball and hit the first boy to end the dodge ball game. Action: Pretend to throw a ball and whisper, “Yea, I threw it.”

Through Definition: to enter into something and continue until you come out the other side. Sentence: She walked through the door. or She wandered through the crowd looking for her friend. Action: Pretend to open a door and walk through it back to your desk.

Punctuation Definition: symbols or marks that are used to organize writing in ways to make its meaning clear Sentence: Periods, explanation marks, and question marks are punctuations that help readers know when they have come to the end of a sentence. Action: Whisper a sentence to your neighbor and write the correct punctuation in the air to end your sentence.

Summary Definition: a shortened version of something that has been said or written, containing only the main points Sentence: You can prove your comprehension level of a story by the details contained in your summary. Action: Quickly and quietly give a summary of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Girl Goldilocks Finds a cabin in the woods Tries the porridge Tries the chairs Tries the beds Bears come home She wakes up and runs off
