What is a Parable? A short story that teaches a lesson.
12
Why did Jesus use Parables? Two Reasons to reveal (show) the truth to those who wanted to know it to conceal (hide) the truth from those who were no interested
13
The Hidden Treasure & Pearl When we believe in Jesus we will begin to experience the wonder of the Kingdom. We should joyfully make the Kingdom of God our number one priority. The Kingdom of God is all we need!
15
What was happening? (context, location & people ) These two parables were told to the disciples in the house after Jesus explained the Parable of the Weeds. This is the seventh parable Jesus told and Matthew wrote in chapter 13 of his Gospel
16
47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. 48 When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
17
How do both of these parables begin? “The Kingdom of Heaven is like…” Simile – a comparison that uses the words “like or “as.”
18
What is the Kingdom of Heaven compared to in this parable? a dragnet
19
What would get caught in a dragnet? Anything swimming or floating in the water, including fish of every kind. 9 “These you may eat, of all that are in the waters. Everything in the waters that has fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the rivers, you may eat. 10 But anything in the seas or the rivers that does not have fins and scales, of the swarming creatures in the waters and of the living creatures that are in the waters, is detestable to you. Leviticus 11:9-10 Note: Remember Matthew is writing to a Jewish audience.
20
Who will separate the righteous and the evil at the “end of the age?” Angels Who are the righteous? Those who believe in and follow Jesus. Who are the evil? Those who rejected the gospel and don’t believe in Jesus.
21
Have we heard any of these phrases in the other parables we have studied? Yes, in the parable of the weeds.
22
There are two groups of people… What does this mean for us? Believers, those who love, believe, and worship Jesus, will be rewarded and spend eternity with Him. Not for what they did, but for what Jesus did! both groups, all people will be judged… Unbelievers, those who rejected Jesus, will be separated from God forever.
