4 4 Kyouto Kyoto(Long.136°E/Lat.35°N) is in the center of Japan. It is also near Osaka.Kyoto has a population of 1,500,000 and an area of 611k ㎡. The center of the city is Kyoto Basin, which is surrounded by many mountains. The mountains are about 1,000m above the sea. Four rivers that run through the Kyoto Basin join together and flows to Osaka.

5 5 Kyouto Kyoto had been as Japan's imperial capital for more than a thousand year (794 ~ 1868). Kyoto has many new buildings, but also has many old buildings such as temples. Some of the temples and other housings are still kept in the same condition as they were in the modern days. Therefore, Kyoto is known in the world as a cultural heritage along with other old cities in the world. And in some areas in Kyoto, the roads are crisscrossed at a right angle from many yearsa. Kyoto is a city that has both new and old culture. There are also many traditional festivals in Kyoto. On the festival's day the roads crowd with many tourists.

6 6 Kyouto In the southern area of Kyoto, a lot of tea is grown. Kyoto has flourished with the production of sake in Fushimi and silk-weavings called Nishijin-ori from the old days. Porcelain, bronze, and lacquer ware are also made in the industries. But recently, mechanical industry is developing. Tourist industry is the support of the city. Kyoto is blessed with fine nature throughout the year. Kyoto's views change dramatically throughout each seasons.

7 7 Kinki. The Kinki region is surrounded by the Sea of Japan to the north, the Chubu region to the east, the Chugoku region to the west, and the Pacific Ocean to the south.
