Bobby Phillips Bobby Phillips Bobby Phillips is the protagonist of this story. After his shower, he realized that he couldn't see himself in the mirror. He was invisible. Bobby and his family struggles to keep the secret of him being invisible. Puzzled at this unexpected phenomenon, it is Bobby’s job to find answers to help him go back to his normal self. Alicia Van Dorn Alicia Van Dorn Alicia Van Dorn is Bobby’s best friend. She knows about Bobby’s secret and she helps him through this obstacle. In addition, Alicia is blind, but still very pretty. She is very caring and sometimes her and Bobby act like more than just friends. ;) Table of Contents

Library Home Most times in the story, the setting is at Bobby’s house, which is in Chicago. It is present time. Due to his invisibility, he can’t go out in his neighborhood as much as before. Home was the safest place Bobby could be. Also, the story takes place in the library. This is where Bobby met and visits Alicia almost everyday. Table of Contents

Similie Personificatio n Mood and Tone “I feel like a book bring read word by word.”(Clements 243) This simile was used to describe how Bobby felt when Alicia was checking if he was really visible again and if it was really him next to her. “There is no room for thinking, just feeling, feeling like the dread is oozing up through the cracks between the boards on my floor.” (Clements 58) The quote sets and eerie and chilling mood for that particular part of the story. “I feel like her eyes are devouring my face.” (Clements 235) This personification because clearly, eyes do not devour faces. This quote compares “her eyes” as a person devouring something. In this situation, the meaning of this quote is that Bobby’s mother won’t stop looking at him. Literary Devices Table of Contents

Andrew Clements first started out as a singer/songwriter. Overtime, he began to realize his love for writing when songwriting. He started out as a book editor and he soon began to write his own books. Furthermore, Clements wrote his first novel, “Frindle” and was published in 1996. Clements believes that school is the best setting for books based on his saying, “School is a rich setting because schools and education are at the heart of every community. Final Overview “Things Not Seen” is really a great science fiction novel about an invisible 15 year old boy. I truly admired the plot, themes, literary devices, and more in this novel. Andrew Clements did a superb job writing it. “Things Not Seen” deserves this rating:
