Unconscious devaluation Devaluation can be conscious, but is more often unconscious Even enlightened, kind, progressive people (including human service workers) devalue others 11

Devaluation matters Devaluation explains why people don’t have equal access to the good things in life that others do Being devalued results in the likelihood that bad things will happen to you, that you will be treated in ways that wouldn’t be tolerated for/by valued citizens 12

Confusing Terminology Are there distinctions between ‘individualised’ and ‘person centred’? The concept of individualising is not at all new Calling the work ‘individualised’ doesn’t necessarily make it so! It isn’t reasonable or ethical to focus solely on one person at the expense of those in their intimate personal network 59
