Challenges to the Full Deity and Humanity of Christ

Affirmations of early Church Councils The Council of Nicea (325) affirmed the absolute deity of Christ. The Council of Constantinople (381) affirmed the real humanity of Christ. The Council of Ephesus (431) affirmed the unity of the Person of Christ (one Person). “Jesus Christ is to be acknowledged in two natures, inconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably; the distinction of the natures being in no wise taken away by the union but rather the property of each nature being preserved, and concurring in one person and one subsistence, not parted or divided into two persons.” The Council of Chalcedon (451) reached the following conclusion,

Scripture affirms Jesus as fully man & fully deity Incarnation does not interrupt nor inhibit deity. The Person of the Word has always been deity. The incarnate Word though in flesh, will of course always be deity. John 1.15: John bore witness of Him, and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’” John 6.40: “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him, may have eternal life; and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”

Scripture affirms Jesus as fully man & fully deity John 8.58: Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.” John 17.5: “And now, glorify Thou Me together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was. John 17.24: “Father, I desire that they also, whom Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am, in order that they may behold My glory, which Thou hast given Me; for Thou didst love Me before the foundation of the world.

Scripture affirms Jesus as fully man & fully deity John 18.1-6: When Jesus had spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples over the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden, into which He Himself entered, and His disciples… Judas then, having received the Roman cohort, and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth, and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He *said to them, “I am”… When therefore He said to them, “I am,” they drew back, and fell to the ground.

Scripture affirms Jesus as fully man & fully deity Isaiah 7.14: “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. Isaiah 9.6: For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. Micah 5.2: “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.” (Matt. 2.6 proves this speaks of Jesus)

Scripture affirms Jesus as fully man & fully deity Colossians 1 Hebrews 1 1 Timothy 1.17: Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. Titus 2.13: looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus… 2 Peter 1.1: Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ…

Scripture affirms Jesus as fully man & fully deity John 19.36-37: For these things came to pass, that the Scripture might be fulfilled,… “THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED.” Zechariah 12.10: “And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him, like the bitter weeping over a first-born. Revelation 1.7-8: BEHOLD, HE IS COMING WITH THE CLOUDS, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. Even so. Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
