Mitad Del Mundo was built between 1979 and 1982.

Mitad Del Mundo was built to show where the equator passed through Ecuador at that time.

With the GPS system the line is now 240 meters north of the marked line in Ecuador. This discrepancy is partially due to increased accuracy but mainly from choice of mapping datum.

Mitad Del Mundo is pyramidal shaped and each side faces a cardinal direction. Tourist like having a photo taken standing in the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

Mitad Del Mundo has a globe that has a 4.5 meter diameter and weighs 5 tons.

Inside the Monument is a small museum that displays the elements of the culture in Ecuador. Inside the museum there are clothes, descriptions of the various ethnic groups, and examples of their activities.

The arrangement of the houses form a replica of a colonial Spanish town.

Cuidad Mitad Del Mundo has many interesting sights to see such as a church, an equatorial plaza, bull-fighting arena, a cock-fighting house, parks, monuments, workshops, warehouses, cultural and scientific museum’s etc. If you visit Cuidad Mitad Del Mundo and Mitad Del Mundo it is a good days worth of site seeing and exploration.
