Two Final Warnings of Jerusalem’s Destruction Boiling Pot: 24:1-14 Death of Ezekiel’s Wife: 24:15-27

The Siege Begins January 15, 588 BC – siege begins July 18, 587 – Walls breached August 12, 587 – City destroyed & burned (Source: International Standard Bible Encyclopedia)

Imagery of the Pot The word of the Lord came to me a second time saying, "What do you see?" And I said, "I see a boiling pot, facing away from the north." Then the Lord said to me, "Out of the north the evil will break forth on all the inhabitants of the land.” (Jer. 1:13-14) He said to me, "Son of man, these are the men who devise iniquity and give evil advice in this city, 3 who say, 'The time is not near to build houses. This city is the pot and we are the flesh.' (Ezekiel 11:2-4 )

Imagery of the Pot Is this a sacred pot? Probably not Metal pot – likely copper (v. 11) Large enough to boil meat and bones to nothing (v. 10) The pot is the city of Jerusalem (v. 6) The choicest of the flock = nobles, wealthy The pot is “rusty” and meat is bad; none chosen Blood in her midst poured on the ground (v. 7)

God’s Message 1.The city will be destroyed (v. 11) 2.Flesh and bones destroyed (v. 10) 3.“she” has wearied me (v. 12) 4.Jerusalem refused to repent (v. 13) 1.The city will be destroyed (v. 11) 2.Flesh and bones destroyed (v. 10) 3.“she” has wearied me (v. 12) 4.Jerusalem refused to repent (v. 13)

The Death of Ezekiel’s Wife Taking the desire of your eyes (16, 18) Do not mourn (16-17) Do not eat the “bread of men” Ezekiel obeys Taking the desire of your eyes (16, 18) Do not mourn (16-17) Do not eat the “bread of men” Ezekiel obeys

God’s Message God obliterate Jerusalem and her residents (v. 21) No mourning because all will be mourning (v. 22-23) No doubt in God’s power when it happens (v. 24)

How Do We Respond? 1.Is it too far off? 2.Is it too easy to rationalize? 3.Do we take God at His Word? 4.Will we follow God?
