Study Series 6 REPENTANCE
Responding to God
2
salvation in view of repentance
PURPOSE To teach the meaning of biblical repentance To explain the plan of salvation in view of repentance Note: This is one of the most important studies. This will encourage a ‘broken and contrite’ heart response to God and His word. Also, it lessens the unnecessary emphasis on baptism for most religious people. Further, baptism will usually follow with less problems when people get the right heart from this. Repentance: Responding to God

Metanoia (me-TAH-noi-ah)
DEFINITION Metanoia (me-TAH-noi-ah) Literally means “change of mind”. This is the Greek root translated as “repentance” in most English Bibles. Repentance: Responding to God

Let us look on the example of repentant people.
Repentance: Responding to God 2 Cor. 7:10-11 (NIV) Key Verse 10Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. Let us look on the example of repentant people. What was the response of the Corinthians? Differentiate worldly sorrow from godly sorrow.

Remember, we all hurt Jesus!
Remember, we all hurt Jesus!

Repentance: Responding to God
Acts 26:19-21 (NIV) 19 "So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven. 20First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and to the Gentiles also, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds. 21That is why the Jews seized me in the temple courts and tried to kill me. What did Paul preach? The word ‘repentance’ means a change of heart and mind. It is a decision that must necessarily be followed by deeds (which is why people were challenged by Jesus to estimate the cost before following in Luke 14). This decision can be made quickly, though the commitment is for a lifetime.

Repentance: Responding to God

Repentance: Responding to God
Matt. 5:29-30 (NIV) 29If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. What kind of attitude does Jesus want us to have when it comes to sin? Repentance is not perfection. Rather, it is a way of life that will result in our becoming more and more like Christ.

Repentance: Responding to God
Matt.
