A settler is a person who lived in a colony A colony is a settlement ruled by another country

They did not have big or fancy homes At first, they only had one room to the house where they cooked, ate, and slept They did not have a lot of furniture in the house

People made their own clothes in colonial times People wore bright-colored clothes made from dyes Girls would wear red cloaks and hoods Girls had their hair covered the entire time

Boys wore stockings and caps They dressed like their fathers at the age of six and wore wigs Babies wore clothes called puddings Boys wore the same dresses as girls until they were six years old

Some children went to a Dame school where a woman would teach students in her home Only boys went to another school after the Dame school to learn more while girls stayed home Students had to have nice handwriting, but spelling was not important

Children sat on hard benches It was heated by a fireplace The teacher was paid in corn

There were no bathrooms or running water in a colonial house Children stood in a wooden tub of water once a month! The father would take a bath first, then the mother, and then the children

Boys played with drums, balls, hoops, marbles and kites Girls played with dolls and sewed samplers

The colonists farmed and grew food to survive Colonists did not have any machinery like we do today to make farming easier

Indentured servants worked under a contract for 4 to 7 years without pay, and would then be set free In the beginning, African Americans were indentured servants who helped colonists complete work on their farms Later, many African Americans were forced into slavery without any rights Slavery is the practice of making one person the property of another

Slaves grew tobacco, cotton, and sugar cane Slaves also worked various jobs including household servants and messengers Slaves did not live in good conditions They were given what they needed to survive: some food, clothes and shelter They were often overworked and punished for not working fast enough or trying to run away
