3. First Sparks After the French-and- Indian War, Britain needed to tax the colonists. The colonists were outraged! Tea, paper, stamps, and other items were overly taxed. The colonists in Boston threw the tea overboard. The Boston Tea Party commenced. After the French-and- Indian War, Britain needed to tax the colonists. The colonists were outraged! 4. Lexington and Concord Many colonists started storing munitions and arms. British came to take away the weapons, but the colonists fought back at Lexington and Concord. They used guerilla warfare (hit-and-run) tactics and forced the British to Boston. The Revolutionary War had begun.

5. Forging an Army The colonists needed an army. And, with an army, they needed more weapons. The colonists attacked Point Crown and Fort Ticonderoga. No Americans were killed. Not one man. Now, the colonists were substantially armed.

6. Weapons of the Revolution  The colonists, British, and Hessians (German mercenaries for the British) use many weapons. They used mortars, cannons, bayonets, swords, rifles, muskets, and pistols.

7. Bunker Hill  Now armed, the colonists led a plain out revolution. The British advanced upon the hills where the colonists were, but the colonists ran out of ammunition and lost the battle.

8. Uniforms The uniforms of the Revolution were red, white, green, and blue. The British wore a red one, the Americans wore blue ones, and the French (when they entered) wore white uniforms. The Hessians wore green.

9. Trenton  Washington (newly elected commander) knew that a decisive victory against the British would keep the troops in line. The Hessians were camped at Trenton, and didn’t expect a bold attack, but the Americans did just that. They crossed the Delaware and attacked. The Hessians were surprised and easily defeated.

10. Bennington The British strategy was to capture the Hudson and split the colonies in two. While doing this, the British wanted to destroy the guns at Fort Edward, near Bennington. The rebels fought and defeated them. This added new recruits to the American army.

11. Saratoga The American fought the British at Saratoga, New York. They used rocks and trees to shelter themselves from the British fire. Also, a miracle happened. The Americans won and this proved to the French that the colonies could win the war and they sent troops. Without the French, the Americans couldn’t have won the war.

12. Allies of the Revolution America’s allies were more than just the French. Spain, Holland, and a few Native American tribes were allies, though many didn’t supply troops. Although German Hessians were on the British side, a special unit called the Duex-Ponts Infantry fought for the Americans.

13. Valley Forge As 1777 drew to a close, the American were forced to make camp at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. It was a horrible winter and many men lost their lives to disease and cold of the winter.

14. Savannah TTTThe British have a new strategy. They think they can win the war if they attack the southern colonies and move up. Charleston was taken and Savannah’s capture came soon. As the British moved up, many battles happened.

15. Treachery The Americans found out they had a traitor in their ranks: Benedict Arnold. He thought the Americans had a 1% chance of winning so he deserted to the British. This was a great loss, because Arnold was the mastermind behind the victory at Saratoga.

16. Yorktown British General Clinton stopped at Yorktown. He was surrounded. As he found out he couldn’t be picked up by British ships, as the Americans had tricked the British into thinking they were in New York. The British were bombarded and defeated. This proved to be the end of the Revolution, in the Americans favor.

17. Peace The Revolutionary War ended when the Treaty of Paris was signed. Our nation, the United States of America, was formed. The Revolutionary War ended when the Treaty of Paris was signed. Our nation, the United States of America, was formed.
