Afrikaner

History The Dutch colonist settled at the Cape in 1652 and over the next 200 years the British, French and German joined them. They first settled along the coast but later they moved inland. The settlers developed a cultural identity and a language forming the Afrikaner group. Their language, known as Afrikaans, was first a spoken dialect but it soon developed into a written language. The “Boers” fought in the Anglo Boer Wars. The Republic of South Africa was established on May the 31 st. In 1948 the National Party came together, with strong religious philosophies, and decided to start the system called apartheid. It was a system that separated the people of South Africa by law of colour. lines.

Religions The first settlers brought Calvinism with them which is used by various groups to identify their beliefs with one of the leaders: John Calvin. He taught how they should worship God, how we should live the Christian life and what sort of government they should be using in God’s Church. In Christianity it is known as a belief system about salvation. Christianity is also another religion of the Afrikaners. It is based on the life of and teaching of Jesus Christ. Christianity is also the world’s largest religion.

Traditional Dress Men: They wore trousers made of khaki material and white shirts made of cotton. Their trousers had straps that started at the waist, gone over the shoulders and ended at the end of the back and they wore leather shoes. They also wore waists coats. Women: They wore long dresses that had collars and cuffs sometimes made of satin but mostly it was made of material. The dresses was mostly made of cotton materials decorated with small flowers and they wore bonnets, stockings and leather boots. The girls wore the exact same dress as their mothers but it was just a bit smaller in length and they wore aprons. The boys wore the exact same thing as their fathers.

Traditional Food Milk Tart: A milk tart is a famous dessert which is a sweet pastry containing a creamy filling made of milk, flour, sugar and eggs. Koeksisters: A koeksister is a syrup coated doughnut which is twisted or braided. It is a very sticky and sweet treat and it tastes like honey.

Flag The flag was designed by Fred Brownell and was first used on the 27 th of April 1994.
