7. The Statute of Apperal In 1574, a law called the Statute of Apparel was put into effect that dictated what people could and could not wear. There were two goals for this law. The first was to limit people’s expenditure for clothing. But it was also to keep the social classes clearly defined. Upper class people were allowed to dress a certain way and lower class people another.
