Science Fair Project: Part 2 Due December 20th

Where are we now? DatesObjectives Check When Completed November 6- 26 Work on finding topics and writing the independent variable, dependent variable, title, and materials in Science Lab Part 1 Should be completed with 2 signatures. By November 27 Part 1 Due: IV, DV, Title, and List of Materials November 27- December 20 Work on purpose, hypothesis, and how to make a data table in Science Lab Part 2 By Friday, December 20th Part 2 Due: Purpose, Hypothesis, and Data Table Framework Due December 23- January 3 Winter Break: This would be a great time to conduct your experiment if you will be home during the holidays. Part 3

Purpose of the Project and Research Why did you choose this project? What do you already know or what have you read about this topic? This should help you form your hypothesis statement below.

Example of Purpose and Research I chose to do this project because I have always wondered what would be the best color of t- shirt to wear in order to stay cool on a hot and sunny day in the summer. I have noticed that when I wore black or dark colored shirts I felt hotter. When I wore lighter colored shirts, I felt cooler. I learned in school that light colors reflect light and dark colors absorb light. This is probably why I felt cooler in the light colored shirt.

Hypothesis Hypothesis: Educated guess about what you think the results will be. You need to do this BEFORE you conduct your experiment. Should be written in the following format: If __(IV)___________, then ____(DV)________, because (explain why you predicted this outcome).

Example of Hypothesis Statement If I put the white t-shirt out on a hot and sunny day for 30 minutes, then the t-shirt will have the lowest temperature, because the white t- shirt will reflect the light of the sun.

Data Table Your data table is where you will collect and organize your data while doing the experiment. You will collect data in the following ways: *Qualitative: Record numbers or measurements from your experiment. This one will be easiest to graph. Qualitative: Your observations and descriptions of what happened in your experiment. Both: Collect both qualitative and quantitative data.

Quantitative Example Example of a Data Table with Quantitative data (numbers/measurements)

Qualitative Example Example of a Data Table with qualitative data (observations/descriptions)

Looking Ahead: Once Part 2 is complete, you may begin gathering your materials and doing your experiment. Winter Break would be a great time to do your experiment at home. Don’t forget to: – collect the data in your DATA TABLE. – Take pictures of your experiment at the end or draw a picture of what it looked like at the end.
