Overview of Common Core Testing AEA ELEMENTARY PARENT WORKSHOP MARCH 12, 2015
2
Assessments Designed to: Guide instruction Check for understanding Provide a Layer of Accountability Standards Based Common Core California State Standards
3
Three Assessments Physical Fitness Testing (PFT) – 5 th Grade California Standardized Test (CST) for Science - 5 th Grade Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) – 3 rd – 6 th Grades
4
Physical Fitness Testing Given to 5 th, 7 th, and 9 th graders Aerobic Capacity – Mile Run – New formula to uses VO 2 max Abdominal Strength and Endurance – Curl Ups Upper Body Strength and Endurance – Push Ups Body Composition – BMI, Skin Fold Test (Optional) Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility – Trunk Lift Flexibility – Sit and Reach, Shoulder Stretch

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Result of Common Core Standards Multiple states participating in the consortium http://www.smarterbalanced.org/field-test/ California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Digital Assessment of Grade Level Standards “Smart” test that adapts to students 2 Sections with 4 Types of Questions Secure Test

Sections Computer Adaptive Tests (CATs) Performance Tasks Classroom activity frontloads student knowledge Formal Task http://sbac.portal.airast.org/practice-test/resources/
8
Question Types Selected-response items prompt students to select one or more responses for a set of options. Technology-enhanced items take advantage of computer-based administration to assess a deeper understanding of content and skills than would otherwise be possible with traditional item types. Editing text or drawing an object. Constructed-response items prompt students to produce a text or numerical response in order to collect evidence about their knowledge or understanding of a given assessment target.
9
Question Types Performance tasks measure a student’s ability to integrate knowledge and skills across multiple Measures capacities such as depth of understanding, research skills, and complex analysis Some constructed-response items and performance tasks can be scored automatically; many will be hand-scored by professionally trained readers. Sample Test Question Sample Test Question
