Hamlet is rude to her before the play, makes a scene of the royal family Believes Gertrude to be inferior to men and cannot be held accountable for her actions as she is a woman In Act One Scene Two ‘Frailty thy name is woman! … Oh god, a beast that once discourse of reason, would have mourned longer!’ Makes awkward dynamic between Hamlet and Claudius, as Gertrude knew of plans yet escapes all responsibility. GERTRUDE

Kills King Hamlet… we think so far. Marries his dead brother’s wife Lack of Trust: -- Hamlet sets up fake situations to see Claudius’ reactions -- Spying: -- Sends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern -- Won’t let Hamlet leave to England CLAUDIUS

Claims his brother, Claudius, murdered him Asks Hamlet to murder Claudius for revenge, and reminds him not to sway from this task. -- Will not rest until Claudius is dead -- However, asks Hamlet to keep the blame away from Gertrude. KING HAMLET

Acts as if he is crazy to secretly figure out if Claudius killed his father. Has actors put on a play that very closely resembles the murder of his father, to see if Claudius reacts. Accuses his mother for being a horrible wife to Late King Hamlet, and being lower than a beast. Wants to avenge his father… but also wants to gain his rightful place on the throne? Is purposefully rude to this family in public to make a scene. HAMLET
