The History of Electromagnetics By: Brent Bouws Engr 302 5/7/01 Professor Ribeiro
2
Overview n Early Electromagnetics n Charles Coulomb n André-Marie Ampère n Allesandro Volta n Michael Faraday n James Clerk Maxwell n Conclusion
3
Early Electromagnetics n Amber - The ancient greeks realized that it attracked chaff and feather particles. n Loadstone - Chinese used it properities to invent the compass.
4
Charles Coulomb n He was a civil engineer in the French army, but had to quit due to illness. n He discovered that electric forces obey the same inverse square law Newton discovered.
5
Alessandro Volta n Learned that body tissue could conduct electricity from his friend Galvini. n Discovered that all metals could conduct electricity. n Created the voltaic pile as the first continuous electric power source.
6
André-Marie Ampère n Early in life his father was beheaded during the French Revolution. n After Orsted discovered in 1820 that electricity induced magnetism he wrote a mathematical paper to describe the behavior in one week.
7
Michael Faraday, early life n Grew up in a poor family in England. n He received very little formal education. n Read many books as an apprentice bookbinder and did experiments in the shop. n Aftering attending a lecture by Humphrey Davy he was hired as a lab assistant.
8
Michael Faraday, later life n While Faraday made discoveries Davy became jealous and tried to take credit. n Knew that electricity could produce magnetism, but could magnetism produce Electricity?
9
James Clerk Maxwell (Dafty) n Born into a wealthy family in Edinburgh. n Was well educated and inquisitive. n Went to Cambridge college, but moved to Trinity for competitive reasons.
10
James Clerk Maxwell n Was a professor at Trinity, Aberdeen, and London. n Put Faraday’s Law in mathematical form. n Discovered the famous 4 equations that govern electromagnetics. n Devout Christian.
11
Conclusion The history of electromagnetics shows that it is a series of discoveries of many people instead of by just one person.
