I’d like to welcome you here today and we hope through this Workshop you’ll have a good idea about the Graduate Research School (our service and support) as well as the doctoral framework and how it can support you in your research studies. After introducing the Framework – its principles and its features, we’ll have a question and answer discussion followed by some activities… which will no doubt lead to more discussion.

Dual focus:

5. Features of the doctoral framework
3 formal stages: each stage marked by explicit development of knowledge and research practice
Subjects and modules integrated throughout the candidature whenever appropriate
Doctoral study plan (DSP) – tool for planning, monitoring and reviewing each candidate’s progress
Use of supervisory panels

6. Stages: purpose and end point
Stage 1 – confirmation of candidature
Stage 2 – confirmation of advanced progress
Stage 3 – confirmation of readiness to submit thesis

8. Doctoral Study Plan (DSP)
Designed in consultation with supervisor/s, drawing on your academic and professional experience and goals, and on study focus
DSP is a tool for integrating the subjects and modules into a coherent program over the 3-4 year candidature.
DSP is also used to monitor, review and report on the student’s progress throughout their candidature.

UTS provides many opportunities for staff to develop research and research management capabilities. These can be divided into seven strands:

Discovery, access and management of information(eg. managing bibliographies, searching electronic databases, managing information, using RSS feeds, IT skills)
Safety, risk, ethics and compliance (compliance with university and national codes, guidelines and legislation)
Developing and managing a research grant (eg. proposals, grant applications, project management)
