(GRS) Nicky Solomon Dean THINK.CHANGE.DO I’d like to welcome you here today and we hope through this Workshop you’ll have a good idea about the Graduate Research School (our service and support) as well as the doctoral framework and how it can support you in your research studies. After introducing the Framework – its principles and its features, we’ll have a question and answer discussion followed by some activities… which will no doubt lead to more discussion.

UTS Framework for Doctoral Education to structure and support your Research Study
Dual focus: Your research study and the advancement of knowledge in that field Your development as a researcher, ie., - be a responsible and ethical researcher research independently and in teams plan and organise project/s develop research skills and knowledge communicate research (in writing and orally) to various audiences

Features of the doctoral framework
3 formal stages: each stage marked by explicit development of knowledge and research practice Subjects and modules integrated throughout the candidature whenever appropriate Doctoral study plan (DSP) – tool for planning, monitoring and reviewing each candidate’s progress Use of supervisory panels

Stage 1 – confirmation of candidature Stage 2 – confirmation of advanced progress Stage 3 – confirmation of readiness to submit thesis

Subjects and modules which include: Disciplinary subjects
- Research methods - Research practice including: safety, ethics, policy, context, commercialisation, intellectual property, conferences, publications, grant writing, networking, and industry liaison.

Doctoral Study Plan (DSP)
Designed in consultation with supervisor/s, drawing on your academic and professional experience and goals, and on study focus DSP is a tool for integrating the subjects and modules into a coherent program over the 3-4 year candidature. DSP is also used to monitor, review and report on the student’s progress throughout their candidature.

Faculty—supervisors, seminars, student conferences, workshops, academics, other students Researcher Capability Development Initiative .html - Research and Innovation Office (eg . developing research grants, working with others) - Library (eg. using databases, using Endnote, RSS feeds) - Institute for Interactive Media and Learning - Human Resources Unit - Maths Study centre (eg. statistics) - University Graduate School—Workshops and Forums, including for example eg. tailored workshops on thesis and report writing, literature reviews etc.) UTS provides many opportunities for staff to develop research and research management capabilities. These can be divided into seven strands: Understanding the research environment (eg. national and international policies, debates, trends in research and research education) Research approaches, methodologies and skills (eg. data analysis, interviews, questionnaire design, use of focus groups, experimental methods) Discovery, access and management of information(eg. managing bibliographies, searching electronic databases, managing information, using RSS feeds, IT skills) Safety, risk, ethics and compliance (compliance with university and national codes, guidelines and legislation) Developing and managing a research grant (eg. proposals, grant applications, project management) Research impact and dissemination (eg. Intellectual property, commercialisation, writing for publication, delivering conference papers, writing a thesis) Working with others (eg. academic and HDR supervision, networking, teams, leadership, industry engagement, self-skills)
