1. King David, King Solomon & The Temple Joe Knapke November 6, 2010

2. Timeline 1050 B.C 1010 1002970930 922 B.C. -- + ------------------ + --- + ----------------- + ---------------------- + ---- + ----- Reign of Saul | Reign of David in Reign of Solomon Divided Reign of David Israel & Judah Kingdom in Judah Lord had Samuel anoint Saul as King of Israelites Saul has many victories Saul’s 1 st Mistake: Before a Battle against Philistines, Saul did not wait for Samuel to offer sacrifices, Saul did it himself. Punishment: Saul’s Kingdom would not continue Saul’s 2 nd Mistake: Saul did not completely destroy the Amalekites and his army “pounced on the spoils of battle”. Samuel says, “Obedience is better than sacrifice” Punishment: The spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and he was tormented by an evil spirit sent by the Lord. (1 Sam 16:14)

3. Young David 8 th son of Jesse of Bethlehem, picked by Lord (& Samuel) (1 Samuel 16:1-13) Plays harp to soothe King Saul’s “torments”, soon made Saul’s armor- bearer. Goliath taunts the Israelite army. David says “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine in any case, that he should insult the armies of the living God?” (1 Samuel 17:26b) He picks up 5 stones & sling and kills Goliath with one stone.

4. Commander David David is presented to Saul and is put in charge of soldiers and carries out many successful missions. [“for the Lord is with him, but had departed from Saul himself.” (1 Samuel 18:12)] David befriends Saul’s son, Jonathan Saul Jealousy “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” (1 Samuel 18:7) Saul tries to kill David and David goes into exile. David spares Saul and doesn’t kill him. Saul admits his guilt but still tries to kill him

5. Death of Saul Philistines pressed an attack on Israelite army and Saul and his three sons, Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchishua, are slain. David mourns Saul’s death and chants an elegy for Saul and Jonathan (2 Samuel 1:19-27) The Lord tells David to go to Hebron where he is anointed King of Judah (reign lasts for 7 years) Ishbaal, Saul’s son, is anointed king of the rest of Israel. “There followed a long war between the house of Saul and that of David, in which David grew stronger, but the house of Saul weaker.” (2 Samuel 3:1)

King David David reigns over Judah for 7 years Sons born to David while in Hebron: Amnon born by Ahinoam, Chileab born by Abigail, Absalom born by Maacah, Adonijah born by Haggith, Shephatiah born by Abital, Ithream born by Eglah Ishbaal, king of Israel gets murdered, tribes of Israel ask David to be king of Israel. David reigns over Israel & Judah for 33 years. He took over the stronghold of Zion, and named it City of David, in Jerusalem. David brings the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, and wants to build a temple for it. The Prophet, Nathan, tells David that the Lord doesn’t want him to build a temple but the Lord has something more important for him.

7. King David The Lord’s Promise to David …” And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm. It is he who shall build a house for my name. …. Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever.” (2 Sam 7:12-13, 16) King David’s Prayer …” Do, then, bless the house of your servant that it may be before you forever; for you, Lord GOD, have promised, and by your blessing the house of your servant shall be blessed forever.” (2 Sam 7:29)

8. King David King David continues to defeat Israel’s enemies, consolidating power.

9. King David’s Sin & Forgiveness David sees Bathsheeba, wife of Uriah, Joab’s armor-bearer, bathing and inquires about her. David has relations with her and they conceive a child. David brings Uriah back from the warfront & tries to trick him into going home to have relations with his wife, but Uriah sleeps at the entrance of the royal palace. Finally, David sends Uriah back to Joab, carrying a note from David telling Joab to put Uriah on the front lines. Uriah gets killed in battle. After Bathsheeba mourns for her husband, David brings her into his house and she bore him a son. The Lord is displeased with David and Nathan informs him of his punishment. David repents to the Lord and the Lord forgives him, but the child born to Bathsheeba must die.

10. King David’s Sin & Forgiveness David comforts Bathsheeba after the death of her son, has relations with her and she bore him a son and they name him Solomon (Jedidiah). Trouble brews between David’s other sons. Absalom creates his own army and wants to be king. David flees yet eventually defeats Absalom’s army and Absalom dies. David mourns his death. 2 Samuel 22:2-51 David’s Song of Thanksgiving to the Lord

11. King David’s Sin (again) David’s power continues to grow and he calls for a census of all the tribes of Israel (800,000 men) & Judah (500,000 men). This greatly displeased the Lord because David did the census out of vanity and ego, he thought it was his power & army and not that of the Lord. David regretted his numbering of the people and asked the Lord for forgiveness. Lord gave him a choice of punishment 1.3 years of famine for your people 2.3 months of being pursued by your enemy 3.3 days of pestilence in your land David chose 3 days of pestilence (70,000 people died)

12. David Proclaims Solomon as King David’s son, Adonijah tries to assume kingship, when David was old. David proclaims Solomon as King, not Adonijah David gives his final instructions to King Solomon and dies after ruling for 40 years; 33 years over Israel and Judah, 7 years over Judah. King Solomon consolidates his power and allies himself by marriage with the Pharoah, by marrying his daughter and bringing her to the City of David.

13. Wisdom of Solomon The Lord appears in a dream to Solomon God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.” Solomon replied, “…… Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong. For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?” (1 Kings 3:9) The Lord was very pleased that Solomon made this request. The Lord gave him wisdom and the riches and glory he did not ask for. Solomon’s wealth and power grew and he was consulted by many due to his wisdom. Solomon also authored thousands of proverbs and songs.

14. Building the Temple Solomon was a major builder Built a Temple and Palace north of the City of David on a hill called Zion. Artisans & craftsman from Tyre and Sidon worked for 20 years in forced labor gangs.

18. King Solomon’s Wealth Solomon developed extensive trade with foreign countries, he commissioned a fleet on the Red Sea to bring back wealth from Arabia and East Africa. He taxed and regulated the caravans going from Arabia north. He enjoyed a long period of peace during his reign.

19. Sins of Solomon Solomon loved many foreign women besides the daughter of Pharoah (Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, Hittites), from nations with which the Lord had forbidden the Israelites to intermarry. “because,” he said, “they will turn you hearts to their gods.” (1 Kings 11:1-2) Solomon had 700 wives of princely rank and 300 concubines. As Solomon grew older, he built high places to his wives’ idols where they burned incense to their gods. The Lord grew angry with Solomon and said that since he did not follow his covenant, that he would take the kingdom away from his son and his son would have only one tribe for the sake of His servant David and of Jerusalem.

20. End of Solomon’s Reign The Lord raised up adversaries to Solomon: Hadad, the Edomite Rezon Jeroboam, an Ephraimite Solomon dies after reigning 40 years over Israel & Judah Solomon’s son Rehoboam succeeded him as King, started out making poor decisions and eventually was King of Judah only. This is the beginning of the Divided Kingdom. (Starting in 1 Kings 12)
